Because it was so perfectly encapsulated guilds at the time that were both tryhard and completely incompetent. Half the joke is knowing that even if Leeroy didn't run in, they would have still failed.

You can do most raids without the proper gear now because most people doing the raids on private servers are much better than the average player back then. The difference with the memes from years ago with the ones from now is that the former were just 1 liners, and people would repeat them exactly the same word by word or just share the videos exactly as they saw it.
