I like "good" villains. "Bad" villains (Nazis, demons, etc) just give the player carte blanche to be an asshole and do horrible things to the enemy "because they're bad". In a way, takes away from doing what it takes to be a hero at the end of the day. Fighting something that has its own merits forces the player to be sure of their own motive and intent. Makes room for cool twists with backstabs or turncoats on either side too

Depends on the game. In something like Serious Sam for instance we don't need a backstory were Mental was touched by his uncle.

I think both are great in their respective games and just need to be used properly in the narrative, or in the first case, lack thereof.

Simple big bad bosses who either lust for power or a single complex goal are very good at giving you an endgame where the game is less centered around its plot and about using gameplay mechanics and the want to adventure/explore more to progress the game.

Whereas the second kind of boss who's fleshed out works well in a game where the main driving force is the narrative, you want to experience more of the games story and wanting to see how this fleshed out character will act is part of that.

Obviously the ideal antagonist will be a nice combination of the two, but an ideal doesn't mean everything should aspire to it, since the most important thing to do is make your characters context sensitive to the type of game, its overall themes and plots and the time and resources available for the game to be made.

i think both types of villains have their uses
however, i think the best use for a "pure evil, unsympathetic monster" villain is in a world that has other "grey" villains to contrast with. for example, a scenario where you're dealing with a bad guy who has some sympathetic motive for most of the game only for some bigger, badder guy to roll in and shit all over the place
in instances like that i prefer the "simple unsympathetic villains", especially if they're done well

if you can only pick one though, a "morally grey" villain will almost always be more interesting than a "morally black" one

It depends on the context of the story as a whole. Some stories don't need a villain, some need one that is complex and others can just have a mindless force of nature. Anyone who ranks villain types into tiers and thinks that one is inherently better than the other is a maximum pleb that doesn't understand how stories are told.

But on average I prefer a villain that I actually want to hate.
