Post times in your childhood where you got stuck in a game for hours with no internet to check out guides.
This room in Super Metroid. I had gotten so used to using the x-ray scope that I didn't think to just try walking through walls. I was stuck here for two weeks trying to figure out what to do after killing Ridley.

I've played this part about 3 times, and I always forget. I think last time I just left without it.
In this room, it took me fucking forever to figure out that you could slash the curtains. I was stuck for weeks.

In thousand year door at the end of the game where you had to blow up a wall that had no crack using a bomb

>pc players pretend like console casuals are the reason we have questmarkers
>forget that this was bethesda's reason

Morrowind was good at rewarding you for wandering into obscurity, which also made finding specific things nightmarish without help, but totally worthwhile.
>Lords Mail in the cave under Ebonheart
>Dragonbone curaiss in a lock level 100 closet, within a ruin that was entered via a cave door jutting out of a rock in the ocean
Good shit.

Jesus christ this quest. I looked throughout the entire ruins. And yet the fucking box was in one of the very first ruins
It just doesn't stand out AT ALL

I really miss that about ES games. If you are lucky, you can stumble upon really great items early on. I remember in my first playthrough finding a ring in a tomb near Seyda Neen that was end-game tier, but it didn't break the game or anything.
Oblivion and Skyrim actually punish you for finishing quests or finding unique items early on, because you get a shitty low level version that is useless in a few hours.

This is the one and only thing that held me up in Morrowind as a kid. Nothing else is as fucking hard to find as the fucking puzzlebox.

I got stuck in FF7 Wutai for like a week. I was so fed up with the whole thing that I wanted to just say fuck it and leave without my materia, but the game doesn't let you.
I had no idea, because of the perspective, that you can walk up to the gong and that it opens the door beneath it.

Growing up playing Super Mario World without internet taught me a lot, I hate it when the new gen players start playing a new vidya and they already are looking at walkthroughs and e-guides, wtf? just play the damn game

Finding all the secret paths and levels was my favorite part of the game. Never got 100% as a kid but that kept me playing

for skyrim that's only true with a few items
it's pretty horrible for oblivion though, pretty much the only non level scaling uniques are daedric quest rewards
