Even for kibry games, Return to dreamland, triple deluxe, and I assume planet robobot are braindead easy and linear.

Coincidentially, Triple Deluxe is one of those discounted titles. Nintendo Selects games are always $20
I agree with you on the "Player's Choice" titles though. That little yellow banner was much better than the mess Nintendo Selects makes of the boxart. But it's worth the discount imo. Thanks anon! I'll go in on it if it's not discounted before E3
I'd rather have this game

I mean thats wrong but you are allowed to have your incorrect opinion after all. Super Star (Ultra) is the best Kirby game. If anything, Robobot is the only one that comes close to possibly surpassing SS(U)

>>376067829
While Amazing Mirror has good difficulty with the level design and enemy placement/health it is awful that everything is connected in a non-cohesive manner. Levels with a hubworld that has secrets is really the best layout for a kirby game.
>>376068086
IMO Triple Deluxe is better packaged together. Planet Robobot for the high octane laggy dropFPS Gurren Lagann combat, but Triple Deluxe has better plot and is more comfy overall; and that's what Kirby games are all about.

>surpasses Super Star
C'mon now I'm not even that big of a Kirby fan and even I know that's bs
>>376069423

But that's why it's so good. Kirby had never had an open-world like that before and I fucking loved it. I would kill for a spiritual sequel where you can play online with friend and you all get to go around exploring different places.
>>376069396
That and they didn't bring back Heavy Mole or Mega Titan.

Kirby is one of the few games on the 3DS that runs @ native 60 FPS and actually looks good in 3D. Just like in Triple Deluxe, there are many areas in Planet Robobot where 3D comes into play (Gordo in forground/background, blocks or cubes outside depth of field).

I think it has to do with the walk speed being so low, or Kirby not accelerating quick enough. The 3DS games really need run buttons, or just removing walking entirely. They really need to switch it up, though. 3 platformers with the same engine in a row wouldn't have flown if Robobot wasn't so fucking sweet.

Triple Deluxe/Robobot movement feels like I'm swimming the whole time. If these games had the kinetics on par with Super Mario Bros I think they'd be a whole lot more fun. I think the way copy abilities are set up, they'd compliment a more lightning-fast friction than the current hampering pacing that makes platforming lethargic and combat a drag.

The term "Yo-yo" is trademarked, but there is no legal issue with using it. It's been around for hundreds of years. It belongs to Sam Dubiner as much as the concept of reacting to something belongs to the Fine Bros. Nintendo had no pressure for using Yo-yos is their older game.
>>376080504
Dedede's design was so weird in Return to Dreamland. At least in the newer Kirby games, they made him a little less derpy.

I always sort of loved the idea of a sentient robot attempting to take over the world.
Shinichi Shimomura's games have the best level design. Adventure, Super Star, Dream Course, Dream Land 2. I also like his direction for the series, the Kirby setting in DL3 and K64 is up untouchable in certain aspects, but without his level design they're not quite as good as the aforementioned games. The level design isn't bad in those 2, but it is a lot simpler. The modern games have the same problem.
>>376081330
>Shimomura's games have the best level design
DL3's level design is pretty terrible, but it looks pretty.
>>376081330
>Adventure, Super Star, Dream Course

>>376081452
You need to read a post before replying to it. I'm talking about his level design, not his direction.
>>376080493
It was Yo-Yo in Ultra, there is no copyright issue, its just they rotate in and out abilities and Yo-Yo's one of thos eunlucky ones that have missed out.
Its not that weird when each game has to introduce new ones while also taking out some from the last to make space for any returns, because they've figured more than 25 abilities and the balance gets fucked. Also as more get added and returned more become semi-staples, so there's less space to be made for the likes of Yo-Yo or Suplex, specially when they require a new engine port/update (this even applies to GBA/DS era, which wasn't built upon SS but NiDL).
I mean as always you can still not like that its been ignored and HAL could do what you want them to, but they haven't. These things are hardly ever a conspiracy as most try to make them out to be.
>>376081562
Except being the level designer. The Kirby's Adventure remake also lists him as co-director so maybe he had a bigger role than that, who knows.
>>376080871
>>376081131

>>376081663
http://sourcegaming.info/2017/03/28/sakurai-discusses-his-game-design-philosophy-2002/
This old Sakurai interview got translated and he says despite being "General Director" on NiDL he was more of a producer than anything, so it might be fair to say Shimomura was the real director, he was credited as such after all
>When I look back on my current job– right now my title is “general director”– well, not that titles mean anything– and essentially I fulfill the producer role, stepping into development on a variety of Kirby games.
Don't let anyone know though, some people have a vendetta against the remake that would go against praise of Shimomura, specially considering people love his visuals yet a couple missing trees apparently ruined the remake.
That said I also suppose Sakurai could've still imposed his vision on him and he just carried it out, non of us where there.
>>376081902
Lets hope the new game would remedy that issue.
>>376082469
It's still a mystery about what influenced him since we still don't know where Shimomura is. I really want to know how he came up with those designs and direction for those previous Kirby games.
>>376082469
I'm one of those people who thinks the remake is visually inferior to the original, I don't think it's really a mark on Shimomura's record though. Weird how utterly different the visuals and atmosphere are from Shimomura's very own games, makes me wonder if some designer had enough say to do things his own way. It even has hats, Shimomura didn't do hats.
>>376080793
>original, DL2, and SS he looks dopey as fuck, 64 his crown is bigger but he still looks dopey

Nigger what are you waiting for? Do it you faggot.

>>376083036
That image for DL3 isn't a fair representation of his design in that game. He looks more serious than he did in DL/Adv, instead of more cutesy and bubbly like he is in SS, but that's Adeleine's idealized drawing of him. She does one for every character and they look a bit different from how they're really presented.
That being said the K64 design is the best one so far. Serious fits Dedede, as long as he's not actually TAKEN seriously in-universe. He's always a goofy character.
>>376076904
Ice skates
>>376082775
We are quite spoiled with how much Sakurai and Kumazaki will spill their guts in interviews and such, but its also equally weird just how much silence surrounds Shimomura. He directs 3 games and does level design alongside Sakurai and not a single word to his name? not even one interview hidden in some old Japanese magazine? not a mention from Sakurai about his equally influential colleague? Its kinda spooky, even if most japanese devs where quiet at the time
>>376082913
Well it should go without saying there's a difference between an original game to a remake, not to mention this was at the cusp of the anime which defined a lot of what Kirby's modern image would become, the box art and the ads are clearly tied to the anime.
That and without shape shifting Kirby there's nothing to stop having hats, Super Star made them an iconic feature and it was a follow-up to Adventure, so it makes sense a remake would make them consistent in that sense
Also as always there are lots of people working on one game and every project is different, so he might not have had that much influence in the art department
>>376083086
I think Return of Meta Knight was the best for creating a breakneck frantic pace and boss-fights that actually tied into the story and scenario.
Like the Generator, Heavy Lobster, the Dual Cannons.
And as you destroy them the damage is reflected in the Halberd as you progress through the stages.
It was insanely well-crafted.
>>376083524
The art style for the images on the left look like Shimomura's art style, but the image on the right look like they're made by another designer.
Fountain of Dream DX kills the relationship of Shimomura, Sakurai, and HAL Laboratory. Lots of stress in its creation, nobody got what they want.
>>376083086
A man of fine taste, I might switch DB with SB but I can still agree otherwise
MWW is often a bit overrated IMO (not bad though), had a lot of reuse and is a bit of quick padding till Marx and the finale, not quite the "true campaign" its treated as.
GCO and RoMK are the game's highlights, but I'm a sucker for the treasure hunting and getting lost in GCO so it wins out for me, the infamous tower section is actually a favorite of mine.

The timer should have been more strict since you are given plenty of time to explore the areas you've come across to. But other than that, it was a really well done subgame. So much that it made Meta Knight even more popular than he was at that time.
Is the Kirby fighting game going to have the same slow physics as modern Kirby games, and will each character feel like a helper/ability, or will it try to be a bit more like its own thing? I would definitely be down for Smash Bros: Kirby Edition if the physics and design principals were more lake Smash 64 or Melee. Kirby Fighters Deluxe isn't satisfying to play for a lot more reasons than Kirby being the only character, it still feels like a floaty platformer. It's justifiable there since it IS a subgame for a floaty platformer, but it wouldn't be justifiable in a dedicated "tensei action game"

Despite being on 3DS I can say with some certainty that it won't be using the main platformer engine, as this year's game should be the Mass Attack/Rainbow Curse half of HAL, and the main line team had their hands full with Robobot and the mini games, spin offs are often new engines and there's no reason to be restricted to the mainline engine in a new game, while the mini-games like Fighters/Deluxe didn't have much choice in the matter. That says nothing of what kind of game it will be though, and you still have to consider how they could always opt for something easier to digest for maximum reach and appeal. I really wouldn't expect 64/melee levels, specially when even modern smash doesn't dare get thereI kinda wish the slow/physics meme would die, but that's an argument for another time, one day I want to go full autism and analyse the games to see why people say this and whether or not they're right and I'm just stupid, but I feel factors like 3D or even the aspect ratio may have to do with it.

No because journos and anyone with access to interviews isn't a diehard Kirby fan, plus the interviews are always in promotion of games so its not like they can go out asking about staff and relations from over a decade ago
Real shame because they may be willing to talk about it if given the chance, though they may not want to speak for someone who isn't there or might've actually requested to be left out of discussions and interviews

>>376084991Dream Land and Dream Land 2 have walking speed about as fast as Dream Land 3's running speed. Dream Land 3 has slower walking speed than Super Star but running is the same speed as in Super Star, but most attacks and moves stop you dead in your tracks (and the camera isn't as close) in Dream Land 3 so it feels slower. The newer games are slower and floatier than DL3 and Super Star, but the moves and actions flow into each other so it seems more fluid or "satisfying" than DL3. Not that I dislike any of them for it, DL3, SS, and RtDL are my holy trinity of Kirby, it's just different styles of physics.

Good post, I agree its all just different styles but if its going to be a common topic I want to actually time the run/walk speeds but it easier said than done and it may not be that universal or comparable. Also how do we define floaty or slow? I guess it should be just something you play and 'feel' but there could be a more objective way of looking at it.
Another thing to think about is level design, go back to Adventure and you realize its fucking tiny, meanwhile RtDL/TD/PR aren't afraid to let the level stretch out or have room to breathe (which also makes enemy/obstacles less concentrated/cramped), as well as have more than 3 screens for the first level.
Also I think camera is an interesting point as its hard to make any concise statement on the 3D games, the camera changes from time to time and each game is more happy to do so than the last, TD having the background/foreground jumping while PR was happier to let the camera pull out further or even go at weird angles (with a bit of a dent on non-New 3DS framrates).
I think it goes without saying everything is connected, and its not just one aspect they can turn up or down, but the whole of game design that dictates how the games play or feel, camera, speed, level design, enemy placement, abilities, hit stuns or frame delays, all of it matter and I don't' want to pretend like I understand it all and can make a definitive statement on just my gut.

Maybe we could pinpoint a landmark for Kirby to reach to so we could analyze how quick he reaches to it in each Kirby game. But we have to also consider the layout of the platform, like steeps or just flat, so we can have a fair judgement about this.

>>376086612
The level in your pic is very clean looking, I know it isn't technically the best nor is it my favorite level but something really sticks with me about levels with designs that flow so well despite lack of complexity.
>>376085738
>>376085886
I bet you think robots are lame
>>376087151
Well I'd look at Kirby/block/tile lengths and how long it takes to traverse them, a simple block per second (b/s) unit. Even in the 3D games we can still find well defined star blocks to run along in, but the issue of camera angles might come along, and how do we define when a block has been hit or passed?
Wish I had a 3DS capture card but I'm not about to become a lets player or buy one just for webms, though it is tempting.
I think we might find the differences aren't that high in the b/s department, but more in the level design and how long the environment makes it to get anywhere, as supposed to just the isolated traversal speed. Or maybe its a significant difference accentuated by level design/length
>>376087674
Well I should be clear I was saying nothing of it or its quality, neither of the modern games. Just pointing out it is considerably shorter, TD's second screen alone could easily be double its length, make of that what you will

>>376088073
You comparing the first levels in Kirby games really reminds me that Planet Robobot did a really terrific job doing the introduction. You have room to play around, explore, and practice your ability, introduce the basics of foreground and background interactivity, and shows you how major of a threat the villain is by throwing a mechanized Whispy Woods chasing you down in a levelwhich you can also beat if you're brave enough. I hope later games would learn from this.
>>376087835
I have nothing to contribute but your post is cool and well thought out dude.

>>376088580
Like I said before, I thought they would never top this boss fight before, but look where we are now.Although I'm still afraid they won't top Star Dream.
>>376088385
Kinda figured after I posted that, oh well
I do think its nice that despite how simple the levels may seem they still provided a great deal of fun, despite the limitations of the system Adventure was densely packed, I doubt just anyone could've pulled it off. It also stands in contrast to the rest of the system's games, which tried their hardest to be as long and unbeatable as possible to give people their money's worth, but one can still find plenty of worth in Kirby, all of it for that matter, I will replay levels or games just for how fun it is, even if its easy.

Running speed, turning response time, Jump speed + height, fall speed, air maneuverability speed (not flying) and the amount of frames any given attack takes.
>>376087674
Well it's the first level and that image doesn't include blocks or enemies, two important aspects of level design.
>>376089125
If it's hacked, why would you update it?

>>376089047
I agree wholeheartedly, there's some sort of charm to Kirby that always brings me back to it at some time or another. I didn't spend as much time on Robobot as I did say, the Legend of Legacy, but I often go back to it due to how enjoyable it is despite having 100%'d the game, and the same goes for many older Kirby titles. Good combination of gameplay and stylistic charm.
I felt bad for this motherfucker, but I also really dig that evil laugh he had going. Especially when he does that laser attack with the giant cube. Do you think we'll have a villain like this ever again? Or will it be a generic, evil darkness entity?
>>376088669
It was pretty great, I think they also did great in reserving the Robobot until level 2, while the others were eager to blow their gimmick load early on, they decided to give it its own introductory level as supposed to mashing it unto the end of the first, which should serve to introduce the base game

The movesets of the more recent games may feel like they flow into each other better, but I felt like the individual moves felt better in Super Star.
Mirror's hold B for example in my memory felt good to use in SS because the swipe leading into the spread of mirror shards is fast and has a sharp fast sound to it, while in PR it's sluggish and I think they use the same "swipe" sound which doesn't fit the slower animation. But that may be my memory playing tricks on me because I don't have my copy of Super Star on me right now, just PR.

Too bad it wasn't designed as one big cohesive world. The areas and even the levels within those areas seemed very patched together. If it flowed better like Great Cave Offensive with more freedom it would be a lot better. I'd like to see a successor to that game do the formula better.
I wish boss rush gave the bosses alternate palette arenas like Dreamland 3 did.
>>376091735
Well that reminds me of how everything just works™ when it comes to the transition into other phases and how the imagery shifts, going from a sort of bird thing to the top of a pocket watch, while the "feathers" turn to rays of light for a sun/star (while Access Arc literally eclipses the sun). Meanwhile its always a giant screw, you've been screwing them in and out all throughout the game so the screwdriver drill is an awesome payoff
>>376091345
You mean since the crown.
Sectonia and Haltmann were cool. But it's always one step forward, two steps back. They reveal too much and add a lot of stupid and unnecessary things that hurt the villains.

That's retarded as most all of it was an accident or out of his control, Star Dream was behind all of it even before the fusion, and while not as "sentient" its quite likely in its faultyness it planned a lot of this out. By the time the game happens Haltmann is just acting by its "business plan" and Kumazkai even says here it was out to destroy the hearts of those who wish to control it.
