shovel knight is one of the greatest video games I've ever played I have 70+ hours on it

Part of the problem is how hypocritical their design dogma was. The number one rule was trying to keep it as close to NES rules as possible, but they were stretched and broken arbitrarily, and what rules they did kept to hurt the game.

They'll restrict better animations and more alive environments to the Japan localization because of Famicom's better hardware, but King Knight's chandeliers break the animation rule and the soundtrack only works through a Famicom sound chip that used additional channels. They'll put in fewer enemies on-screen because of limitations of older hardware, but they don't work around this creatively in the same way as older games. The original Castlevania from 21 years ago holds about the same pace as Shovel Knight, but is much more harrowing and engaging because how they pace out their enemy limitations. In both titles, you usually wont' see more than 3 on screen at a time, but Castlevania's bestiary puts you through the wringer because devs creatively worked with what they had.

All these problems carried over to Plague of Shadows due to reuse of the same areas, and an already sloggish and piss easy game was easy to blow past due to Plague Knight's aerial mechanics. It was only in Spectre of Torment that they found a great balance for their gameplay, but the expac itself doesn't reach a satisfying end. Despite already being paid for by the Kickstarter and the game selling 1.2 million copies, Spectre Knight supposedly warranted a price increase, but it was even shorter than the previous campaigns.

I'm still looking forward to King Knight, as the game itself wasn't terrible, but it's not as realized of an idea as people make it out to be. Shovel Knight still fell into pitfalls for following the retro meme without the devs knowing what made older games work within their restrictions, and it daunts my hopes for King Knight that people still sucked their dick after a bump to $25 for a 2-3 hour campaign.

Depends on what you want out of a game. Axiom Verge, Hollow Knight, La Mulana, and Environmental Station Alpha were all decent indie platformers, but they point towards more exploration than stage based.

As someone who never played NES/SNES platformers, I found Shovel Knight to be really underwhelming. The soundtrack is really grating to listen to and the movement never really clicked with me. I enjoyed Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight and Ori and the Blind Forest far more.
