The battle system in Caligula.
The game has a fantastic story, OST, and solid artwork throughout, but the battle system goes from "CUHRAZY DMC-STYLE COMBOS" to "not this shit again" really fast.

Even in the tips provided by the devs it states to avoid enemies. It would have been a cult hit if it wasn't so tedious to play later on.

That's exactly the problem though. If you are trying to tell a story, just tell it. Don't punctuate it with gameplay that forces a break in just telling it.

There is definitely a point to be made about how poorly a story is told through video games as they are. A game where your choice actually matters would change that, but it becomes very expensive to make with each branching storyline.
>>
>>376050323
Uh, could it be Fhe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrimall-out 4?
>>
>>376049062
While I sort of agree (self imposed challenges are the bomb) what is worse is a game where difficulty is only changes simple numbers in the game (xp rewards, enemy damage/hp, amount of ammo found) AND AT THE SAME TIME you cannot change the difficulty.

Hell not being able to change the difficulty mid game is a huge turn off for me.

Playing Deus Ex invisible war was annoying because at the early game playing on the highest difficulty was damn fun for my playstyle/skill, but HOURS into the game the difficulty ramped up where combat solutions just felt silly.

There is no reason to not have a game able to change difficulty on the fly. Sure changing the difficulty should lock you out of certain content/achievements but if your game is more than a few hours in length players need to be able to change difficulty.
>>
>>376048072
How the heck are destructible environments bad? Destructible cover in shooters is the best.
>>
>>376050589
Story in video game is perfectly viable so long as it is told in the format of Souls or Zelda 1. Pushing a literary narrative in a medium that gives 100% control to the player does not play to its strengths at all

I agree with that. Letting the player sort of interpret/write the story for himself is definitely the way to go. The games you named in addition to most of the Metroids do that well. The story is there if you look for it, but it is not explicitly told.
>>
>Batmobile segments
To be fair everybody was whining about wanting it since the first game, so it wasn't really the developers fault on that one.

Games like these AND I believe 4X games could really benefit from a really quick 'test arena' where you could "try before you buy".

Maybe to not give away any of the mystery of the game right off the bat you would 'unlock' different tech/abilities/units/ect once you've seen them in game or gotten sort of close to unlocking them in game.

Like wise for some type of RPG getting to see the skills in action could be really awesome, like seeing an enemy or a NPC be/use the class/skill you could unlock, that way you can at least see that meteor on sorceress in D2 is not as cool as visually/mechanically as frozen orb.

Or just an expensive respec. D3 as much as I hate the design of most of it was great this way.

No, I dont want a 20% chance of making a better version of the armor im crafting, because now I just have to make a shitload of them because people only want the better version and sell the normal ones for scrap. Same with upgrading, if I get upgrade stuff for a few million dont fuck me over.

Same with diablo 2 with drops having semirandom stats. Nice Skin of the Vipermagi drop you got there, too bad it only rolled 21% on the resistance.

Being read a story vs having a conversation is what I think of from your post.

When having a conversation sure the other person could force their views and steer the conversation but it can be a beautiful thing when you both are flowing together.

Playing a game of "would you rather" or "what would you do".

Similar D&D or another roleplaying game can make some of the most memorable and actually impactful stories for a person if the DM and players are 'good'.

Human to AI interaction is just not there yet so we have to rely on great artists from a gameplay/story/art/sound to all work together in a timely manner to make a great whole.

I rather have stat distribution than getting stuff based on what you use. Like in dungeon siege you could try to play as a paladin with both healing magic and melee attacking, but the exp you got from healing youself was way lower than you got from fighting. So you just dropped magic. With manual stat distribution you can steer the crappy system right.

Or do you want to AFKrun into a wall for half an hour to upgrade your carrying capacity

Puzzles
Unless the entire gaem is based around them they are just irrarating. The worst offender is arguably Mass Effect series
>first game had that stupid room in snow planet
>second game had stupid notepads that gave you money and weapon blueprints
>andromeda had that stupid Chinese crossword that you NEED to do to terraform planets seriously fuck this game who thought it was good

The moment they introduced this to me was the moment I dropped it. Like it might have been bearable if you didnt have to manually vacuum up each one, like holy shit how did they think thats a good idea. I guess that's why the days are so long.

Mortal online style where you can build anything out of any material you want and each material has its own properties such as weight, durability, hardness, etc. You then build the individual pieces of each weapon and combine them, so you can put an axehead on the end of a spear or whatever, complete control over the design of your weapon.

This is the only acceptable crafting system as it promotes experimentation and learning the nuances of the system. Crafting systems that are just recipes are come garbage because rather than finding 10 horse anuses to build a weapon, I just want to find the fucking weapon.

The system is flawed from a player perspective because eventually people will discover the best min-maxed combinations for weapons and everyone will only use that.

This, especially when they're random mobs, not even bosses.

Also, the opposite. Bosses that are invincible except for a few hits in the right spot, which they just show every now and then for some reason, even after you already hit them there.

>you only won because this boss was somewhat suicidal
>>
>>376049240
What's wrong with this? Getting a good rank is obviously supposed to be a challenge mode. Don't do it if you don't want to.

>>376056302
that part was insane. whoever tested the game and thought this was ok should get scrotum cancer and die a slow and painful death.

A problem with lots of stealth games. They should all use the MGS radio system or something similar.
>>
>>376055983
So what? The fun is in trying to discover a better combination. It's stupid to remove build and customization options just because theres a best build. It's not even a problem in mortal because the best materials to use are also the rarest materials.

Toxic fallout in Rimworld.
>can't grow anything
>can't hunt because wildlife died out
>can't have anyone outside very long for tasks
If the rng decides to make it brief then it's manageable. But it can last for multiple seasons, robbing you of the only growing season that year. So you better have a huge food stockpile or already have a sizeable hydroponics operation.

I love horrorgames, but when they throw cheap jumpscares at me I stop playing.

Still have to give Outlast another shot after they started out with a jumpscare. I almost forgot I even had it until I recently heard talk about a sequel.

There could be an important collectable on this level, but in order to figure that out you just have to fail a bunch of times.

Nah, we wouldn't do that to you, we didn't hide anything here. So you wasted 15 attempts searching for nothing.

I like that you can just quit the game when you want, also it allows you to see which path is the main path and load an earlier save to get everything. Sure cheesing saves can be dumb but you can limit yourself if you want to
