It was decent, but having the stats and levelling for a game that's purely stage-based and linear was a dumb move, since you have to keep grinding the same stages over and over. I don't care if RCR was an inspiration, it would've been better without that.

Yeah it was a little weird. I got to the Todd Ingram fight or the Ninja level before realizing that the game is suddenly way too hard and I'm supposed to be going back to the Shopping District to buy stat up items. Then I spend all my money on stat up items and the game is suddenly really easy

Pretty much, the game is hard as balls at low stats but if you max your stats out it becomes a cakewalk. And since every level is balanced for different stats, there's no way to have every level stay reasonably challenging as you progress, every time you get stronger you take the fun out of the early stages as a result.
