Consoles right now are especially just PCs in there architecture.
If a PS4 or next Xbox come out and they don't have backwards compatibility by default then the only reason right that will be is because console developers don't don't you buying old PS4 Xbone games.

There will be no more excuses anymore.
Old consoles did use unique architectures whit the Xbox 360 being the crossest to a PC (this is why so many 360 games acualy work better on Xbone than 360 instead of just being emulated).
And this unique architecture did acualy make porting harder and usually why PS3 mutiplats looked and played the worst in many cases despite the console being not that weaker compared to 360 and even stronger in some.

Now there are no longer any excuses.
Because we all know a PS5 and Xbox Next are just gonna be more powerful budget gaming PCs than the Current budget gaming PCs consoles are.

Hell 99% of all games to come out on PC in the last 20 years work just fine on the most modern PC.
Usually taking only a bit of tweaking to work. I think even less than 1% just doesn't work.
And if you specifically talk about a console circle than 100% of all games made in the last 4-8 years work on a modern PC.
So there is not excuse for consoles other than Manufacturer greed.
