>honorable warrior who was willing to be humiliated for the sake of his people, discarding all rank and prominence in his society
>risks execution by learning from the dark templars, all in an attempt to save aiur from the zerg
>completely destroys the most horrific parasite monster in creation in a fantastic scene filled with emotion and not a single word said (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YVD9OlSngg)

On a scale of 1-10, I'm still angry.
>>
Sequels are about deconstructing the first, which is why I really don't like sequels for the most part.
>>
>>375985416

Don't get me wrong though, to an extent I hate Brood War for making Kerrigan out as this aweome badass who can do nothing wrong.
>>
>>375986003
As much as i love the zerg as a whole and Kerrigan, she was very Mary sue in brood war, the shit she pulled out on the 3 episodes was, well, was really fucking crazy.

>Arrives just in time to kill Aldaris
>Somehow Infects Raszagal without anyone noticing
>An infection powerful enough she can pretend to be ok
>Zeratul never noticed this
>She masterminded everything and got her way in the end

But to be fair, her conquest wasn't just her, she had help from literally everyone from the original game.

I'd say yes, but of course it's Blizzard so it's intentionally ambiguous so they can backpedal later

It's implied that the Terrans in Koprulu are colonists from Earth, and the UED is explicitly an Expeditionary Force, so yeah it's safe to assume Earth has prime Aiur-level strength

There was recently a canon novel where Zagara is Queen of the Zerg and has been doing her best to maintain peace with the terrans and Protoss and redirect the efforts of the Swarm to introducing life to dead planets instead of overrunning living ones

Abathur gets butthurt claiming evolution is impossible without conflict, breeds a pack of tiny Hydralisks and attempts a coup

Zagara gets aid from Valerian Mengsk and a couple of Protoss carriers, wipes out Abathur's new creations and defeats him in single combat ... then forgives him and offers him a place by her side. Just like Kerrigan once did for her

Blizzard feels much more politically correct, and I think it explains most of it. They can't hurt any feelings and can't take any risks with a 'hero's' honor that could come anywhere close to making a dark, tragic hero or story like they uses to have.

"You speak of knowledge, Judicator? You speak of experience? I have journeyed through the darkness between the most distant stars. I have beheld the births of negative-suns and borne witness to the entropy of entire realities... Unto my experience, Aldaris, all that you've built here on Aiur is but a fleeting dream. Fuck.
>>
>>375990440
She got them all duped, a fucking mastermind.
Terrans being terrans cannot fathom the communicative prowess of the Protoss, nor can they best Kerrigan's hivemind. As a single unit, not disrupted by PSI Emitters and puppet Cerebrates, the Zerg are brutal enough to take on multiple armies.

She wouldn't have stood a chance if she didn't pull the strings she did. That, and Samir DUran's meddling allowed her to be the monster she ended up being.

... then comes SC2 rearing its ugly story. At least WoL was entertaining and fun for the most part.
>>
>>375999186

The Zerg can simply throw countless numbers at their enemies until they break.

War of attrition works surprisingly well; assuming you don't mind huge losses.

There were only a handful of things good about sc2
- Tychus
- Abathur
- Alerak
-The Zerg mission where you play a parasite on a Protoss ship
- The Zerg campaign that lets you brainlessly send a tidal wave of Zerg (especially winged zerglings), that pour in like water and bury the enemy with corpses
>>

One thing that always stuck out to me is in the Starcraft 2 collector's edition behind the scenes DVD. Where some fucking writer says something along the lines of "The starcraft story is actually all about a boy and a girl" with the implication being raynor and kerrigan.

And I can't get over how wrong i felt that interpretation was. But I think it explains why they're all so lovey dovey in 2.

>>
>>376000194
They wouldn't mind as much as we do, sure.
But they won't miss a chance to make snide remarks about that scene everytime they can. Terrans will come up with more nicknames than you can count, and the Protoss will nonchalantly comment about the "peculiar hip thrusting with savage moans" or "crooked phallus".

You will get shit from this. Better steel yourself for that and be better than Raynor in combat, to save face.

BW Kerrigan was a full flesh super villain. She was the bad guy, you were suppose to hate her, you were suppose to be on the edge of your seat every time she showed up she was "Queen Bitch of the Universe" it was built up to be a very satisfying "boss battle" if a sequel ever came.

SC2 Kerrigan was basically tragic female protagonist 178. The reverse heel turn was so anticlimactic, she was not in control of who she was-what she became-. In a solitary moment they murdered all of SC1 by making the big villain that claw her way up to being the final boss of the Zerg, be nothing more than a puppet filling her role and saving the universe.
And this isn't even touching how much they ruin Tassadar, the Overmind and Raynor.
Only characters not lobotomized were Artanis(a fresh up start that wasn't flesh out), Zertaul(mostly because he was a boring set piece for the bigger narrative in all the games) and Arcturus Mengsk (because hey a 50 something bearded white man can stay as the ultimate asshole of the universe)

I seriously struggle to come to terms the same guy that wrote Warcraft 1-3, Diablo 1 and 2 and Starcraft wrote this garbage.
>>
>>376001807

>the bit with the "I'm the man who's gonna kill you" speech

>>
>>376001639
Oh there was definitely some shit going on between the Terran Sarah Kerrigan and Raynor during the first campaign. It's the whole reason why Raynor left the Dominion, because Arcturus Mengsk left Kerrigan behind at New Gettysburg to get overrun by the zerg.

It's kinda like... the most important event in the whole relationship between the 3.
>>
>>376001802
It's not darker, perhaps a little more. It's just that the characters and their motivations are more convincing than petty, brainless revenge. Revenge abounds in both stories, but there's a proper way to go about it, not just "GRR KILLED RAYNOR I KILL YOU ALL".
>>
>>376000376
>"The starcraft story is actually all about a boy and a girl"

In a mission briefing she talks about how she's keeping you alive for almost sentimental reasons as you were her guardian during her incubation.
She also talks about how, now that the overmind is dead, you're answering to her.
While other cerebrates went more or less rogue.

Youdon't remember kerrigan killing you because it never happened in the game - but is just a small note in the starcraft wiki to explain the lack of "you" in Starcraft 2.

Yea, it's a good sign.

He is responsible for so many garbage decisions on the story-telling side of Blizzard.

>Thrall post WC3 becomes Green Jesus
>Horde lore becomes focused on Orcs and muh warchief
>Lore becomes stuck in the most boring aspect of Warcraft (orcs vs. humans) for every expansion pack pass WotLK.
>The status quo does not change and Metzen writes completely retarded reversals rather than not even hint at the quo breaking (Slyvanas goes full genocide, but is now suddenly warchief despite people hating Baby-Grom).
>Metzen unintentionally writes the orcs to be so bad that he proves Daelin right.
>Metzen doesn't realize this is a golden opportunity to explore Jaina's character, so he just makes her go crazy and call it that.
>He does this despite trying to make Kerrigan this deep and independent woman.

>He ruins the 40k inspired grimness of SC with a really, really badly written love story (like life-time boring dialogue)
>He ruins the extremely important aspect of Raynor swearing on his soul to see Kerrigan killed for all she's done
>He takes the interesting idea that Raynor feels guilty for what happened to Kerrigan and cocks it up by being too lovey-dovey.
>SC becomes another generic ass "Power of friendship conquers all" and "an ancient evil awakens".
>Just like WC all the factions remain in the same space, guaranteeing that Blizzard can return to a completely fuck up the message of their own ending (just like WC, thanks Metzen).

Yeah, that was disappointed. It was discovered pretty early and literally nothing was done about it. It wasn't even brought up with Tychus himself, like calling him out on the situation and asking him what the hell had happened.

But then again, Tychus' entire role was unnecessary if the writers had remembered that Raynor wanted to kill Kerrigan himself, after the events back in BW.

It's not even about taking chances, but to get a writer who doesn't write fuckacularly bad dialogue and plots.

Like WoL completely forgot Raynor's last speech to Kerrigan. Metzen made it a love quest to free the corrupted love interest. The implications there are already terrible (trying to get with someone who is terrible for you). But then Metzen cocks it all up by ruining any of the interesting aspects of the story.

WoL could've had the same ending if the story was about the internal conflict in Raynor to kill Kerrigan or try to save, culminating in the end where its him with a gun and a still clearly infested but unconscious Kerrigan.

But instead they add Tychus for some fucking reason, do nothing with him, and make Raynor a blank slate that has nothing but non-conflicts.

On this site, it seems more or less uninformed, so I won't take them too serious - they claim (you) were killed on char along with the overmind, which is utter bullshit since in broodwar Kerrigan specifically tells you she's grateful of your protection while in incubation.
In pic related the link is dead, leads to 404 - so maybe I'll have to look through various metzen interviews.

She specifically says she's grateful for your protection - yet no mention of it here.
The plot thickens.
>>
>>376002159
>Raynor literally swore to kill Kerrigan
Raynor always had a boner for Kerrigan, I don't understand why people put so much emphasis on his adventures with Fenix. She was even more of a dick in BW, but she let him live multiple times, so maybe it's natural for him to give it back as the opportunity arrives.

I think what I disliked about Starcraft 2 so much, is that the atmosphere was just gone, the Terrans went from a team being a bunch of rednecks in space, to being watered down so much they became the bland "human team" in Starcraft 2. Everything just looked so bright and cartoony in Starcraft 2, it's just offputting, I don't exactly want an edgemeisters grimdark setting, but I felt like Starcraft 1 had a lot of a more balanced colour palette and didn't look so cartoony. Also, the game really messed up with the units, why do they sound so bad? Where are the goliaths? Why do the siege tanks sound like wind-up toys?

It's a shame because they are like 8/10ths of the way there, but thay 2/10 was just so poorly mishandled.

What sucks about Metzen is he occasionally does have good ideas. Garrosh was a good idea his whole story if interesting and in Cataclysm he is a good character hes being aggressive, taking better lands he thinks the Horde deserve and making sure his forces and cities are ready should alliance or any other threat arise. But he has a limit to what he will do telling Sylvanas never to use plague as a weapon. >Q: What about the characters that you played as in the original and Broodwar (the Cerebrate, Executor, and Magistrate) are they dead, replaced?

>A: “Dead. Gone.” In the new Terran campaign you’ll be taking on the roll Jim Raynor, you’ll be controlling his conversations with the characters etc, but at the same time some characters will refer to you as Commander, “so we’re really merging the two ideas…” Metzen feels that while the approach taken in StarCraft was cool, when you took five steps back it didn’t make sense trying to work the characters into the story. There were actually some early drafts of SCII that followed the former games’ approach but it just came off too clunky and it was too difficult to try and change the story to accommodate the new characters you’d be playing as.

Best Zerg bro (and other loyal guys) is dead. Killed offscreen because a loyal subservient giant slug that can only be killed by dark energy is too "difficult" to write plot for.

Raynor is kind of man who blames himself. And maybe he it nurtured his hate for some time, and also in contrast his feelings for old, uncorrupted Sarah grew even more. So coming to conclusion that to make things right like in good old times he should somehow uncorrupt Kerri is quite logical.

So, Raynor to me is the most unbelievable character ever. His not-girlfriend betrays him and murders millions of people something like five times, Raynor witnesses this, and Raynor still wants to forgive her and get his dick wet.

Closest I got to that is pretty petty in comparison. My old best friend just ghosted on me in college, and I later found out he tried to tell a bunch of wicked nasty rumors about me despite never being man enough to say anything to my face.

It's all good now though.
He ended up dropping out in his final year, getting kicked out of his apartment for being a lazy pothead, before declaring himself to be "coming out" and literally sucking strangers' dicks in public bathrooms.
Last I heard he was selling insurance on the phone for rent money and his new best friend after me fucked off for a job in London leaving him behind. Not gonna lie, I'm well pleased about it all.

>>376006069
BECAUSE THEY'RE RETARDED

Here's something about being a businessman. You do your best to downplay what existed before so you can sell what is available now. If you don't have an answer for questions about facts you've simply forgotten, it's just best to just brush it aside and claim the new stuff is better. It's almost like being a politician; take focus away from where you fucked up and pivot to what you're strong at, in this case, tell the people about how awesome Jim Raynor is going to be.

A disappointing bit about all this is that they had a quick answer, which means they had thought about the answer earlier, which then means they made a horribly shit decision and didn't realize it. Even worse is that nobody in that room demanded an explanation. But then again, nobody in that room knew where they were taking the plot at that time.

Take a look at how the ghost in Starcraft 1 went from cool, but a little edgy secret ops guy to full blown edgelord in Starcraft 2.

Also the mechanical breathing was way quieter for ghosts in 2, which is just wrong. Everyone loves to hear heavy mechanical breathing.

I'm tempted to believe this may just be the case. For fuck's sake it's ALWAYS muh corruption with Blizzard games now. It's getting a little tiresome. Even outside the waifus something is always being corrupted by something. Whatever happened to just killing things off instead of corrupting everything for the sake of it?

But yeah, I'd squeeze in a plump/fat girl into every game I made too just because.

>Seriously, why the fuck would Kerrigan show up in her old disgusting Ghost rig? Show up in a dress or something goddamn.

Wasn't she raised in typical secret facility, where people with questionable ethics turn gifted children into assassins?
I really don't think she is comfortable in dress.
Also, Jimmy may have only seen he in ghost suit, so if it hallucination, he wouldn't be able to see something outside his conscious.
>>
>>376007708
Selendis
when they meet in Wings of Liberty she shares he remembers Raynor helping her lead her people out of Auir.
>>
>>376003665
He grew up and thought he had to do morally grey stories about good people turning bad and evil people not really being evil. It never went beyond that.

They really should've just stuck with ripping off other media and paying homage to cool stuff they liked. Their old games had cliche stories and characters, but they were still done in an entertaining way.
>>

God fucking damnit I hate this stupid shit. Zerg being misunderstood dinosaurs and all.

>>
>>376007795
>Wasn't she raised in typical secret facility, where people with questionable ethics turn gifted children into assassins?
That was the original SC.
retcon #1 she was some special case Arcturus kept around him during her training and it was implied sex with him.
#2 made her the pesdo adopted daughter of Arcturus and she had a normal childhood with no implied sex/rape.

Nova got retcon to being just a top class solider type that got put through the program.
Basically SC2 destroyed the original lore that Ghost were gifted children solders raised to kill really good.
>>
>>376007795
No, I mean the hallucination makes sense that she shows up in the Ghost rig because that's the only way Raynor has seen her.

But if she was ACTUALLY there, like actually picking him up from the bar as Blizzard wants us to believe, why in the fuck would she be wearing her Ghost rig - keep in mind an outdated suit of equipment that would have been torn from her body when she was thrown into the chrysalis.

Did the Zerg carefully pick off each article of the rig and store it for her in some zerg-carapace-closet? Did she carry the stupid thing with her while she was the Queen of Blades?

She just became God and is coming to pick up her lover. And for that moment she decides to show up in the most attention-drawing outfit in the entire Terran Dominion and the "news" has the nerve to tell us nobody paid attention to where Raynor went. Fucking FBI agents walk into a bar in broad daylight, take the Marshall away, and NOBODY notices? What the fuck.

Hence why the drunk hallucination is the only explanation that makes sense.

Reminder that 1 random scientist was able to use the research lab of a battlecruiser to cure the zerg infestation within a few days

How the fuck am I supposed to tell who is female if I'm deaf? Think of the deaf players Blizzard!

The sector got fucked over by a strong invasion face who only succeeded because everyone else was in a disorganised mess. The Zerg had lost their overmind making them useless and the protoss had lost their homeworld and had to deal with the fallout of that and Mensk was still fixing up his rule.

>"Believing that they were capable of countering any of the aliens’ attacks, the UED formed a military expeditionary force to put an end to the Koprulu conflict by any means necessary."

"Expeditionary warfare is the deployment of a state's military to fight abroad, especially away from established bases. Expeditionary forces were in part the antecedent of the modern concept of Rapid Deployment Forces."

It was NOT the entire UED fleet.
>>

The Protoss had the technology to glass entire planets with a few ships like the Covenant in Halo.

The UED was MONITORING the sector; nowhere does it say they sent everything they had at them.

They sent an expeditionary force to find out first hand if they contain it or needed massive backup.
>>
>>376013596

Yeah, so they don't actually have to put a lot of it in there.

But on the other hand, they have still tried to.
If you watch any of the short movies and trailers, there's a plenty of stuff about "racism" against bionics, and the organization of Overwatch itself along with some opposing faction. But all this is only touched on, of course.

Someone else would have made a successful MMO, Blizzard would be forgotten among every other RTS-company or dived into the MOBA-scene faster.

I hate Blizzard now, but the Blizzard we got is probably the best possible Blizzard we could have today. In the end it's not really Blizzard fault for the state of the industry and the gaming-market , at least they fucking tried with Starcraft 2 even though everyone told them making RTSes these days are fucking stupid

It wouldn't be difficult for corporations to drop operations in China, Guatemala, Mexico, etc. and bring those things back to the U.S. The only thing stopping them is that they'd have to pay Americans fair wages instead of the shit they pay the other guys. I have hope we'll see some sort of breakthrough on that front.

The lore about why zealots are such bad assets that will fight gladly to the death is because when zealots die their spirits/souls? Warp back to aiur (that's why the death animation is a flame) and they fight again as dragoons.

Plot hole is why bother assassinating a zealot when he's 100% coming back as a goon?

I remember reading something about how it's a function of their suits/armor. When your body is badly hurt, it teleports you (not your soul) back to Aiur before you die so you can get put into a dragoon.
>>
>>376016586
Yea I wasn't too sure, I assumed it was a souletype thing because of the flame animation. Physically teleporting makes more sense, since all Protoss units and structures are "warped" in.

SC2 had possibly the worst storyline of any big-budget game in history, it was unbelievable how fucking stupid that plot was.

>Overmind was good all along, even though Zeratul linked minds with it and never mentioned this
>Kerrigan wasn't evil, she was just possessed by Zerg-bits, even though she specifically confirms she is in full control of her actions in Brood War
>Kerrigan is a good guy who compromises her own plans to save innocent lives, even though uninfested Kerrigan helped Mengsk murder billions using psi-amplifiers
>Kerrigan is no longer a manipulative villain, just a mean bitch with no stake in anything
>Raynor and Kerrigan's love story is the most important thing in the whole universe, even though it was literally like three flirty banter lines in the first game
>Zerg aren't parasitic worms from a volcanic planet, they're spiky things from a jungle planet
>UED never returns despite still having interests in the Koprulu sector
>Nova is squeezed in everywhere because fans sure loved her in that game that never came out
>Tassadar comes back as a Force ghost
>Fenix comes back as a robot because fuck meaningful deaths
>nobody is the bad guy, they're all being manipulated by Amon
>Duran has a Dragonball Z laser fight with Star Kerrigan
>ANCIENT EVIL PROPHECIES

SC2's story, as a whole, was a mistake. Modern Blizzard is a mistake

>Raynor chooses not to kill Kerrigan because Zeratul told him (giving a memory crystal as proof) that if she dies all life will be wiped out by Amon, not just because he loves her
>Char was a Kel-Morian Combine, Terran world before the Zerg showed up and built all their shit there, The UED victory report erroneously claims char is the Zerg homeworld because their main hive clusters and the overmind are there
>yeah the UED being mia is dumb, they could monitor the terrans before they actually arrived in the sector so they should know what happened there despite their entire fleet being wiped out.
>Nova appears twice in the main story, the Nova dlc campaign was kinda dumb though
>That wasn't tassadar it was a xelnaga assuming tassadar's form (for no good reason)
>Yeah not a big fan of Talandar, mostly because of his shit design though
>Mengsk isn't being manipulated by Amon
>I liked playing a mission as Stukov instead of Kerrigan
>Well I mean, the prophecy wasn't a huge part of the plot
>>
>>376017495
That force ghost thing was a xelnaga tricking zeratul for the prophecy, and the fenix-bot actually decides that he's not going to live a lie as fenix and change his name, but blizzard are greedy jews who intentionally ignored that plot point to continue marketing him as fenix for nostagia bux.

Infestation changes people. That was already pretty obvious in the original SC and BW.

That there is a difference between Sarah and the fully infested Queen of Blades should be obvious to everyone who has half a brain.

If the Overmind was forced or attacked Aiur on his own has literally no influence on what Tassadar did.
Either way he destroyed the Overmind and stopped the Zerg temporarily while giving the Protoss the chance to claim their homeworld back.

How about we talk about the fact that the Protoss rather traveled through the galaxy with their fleet to kill their only hope to win instead of fighting the Zerg?

Now that is some high quality writing in the original SC. I also like how they trust the infested Kerrigan in BW or how retarded Dugalle and Stukovs story was.
>>
>>376018861
No according to Sc2 he was still driven by the goal to consume and evolve, he just didn't want his species to die when all was said and done. He refused to be a puppet in a bigger game

I think the real problem is that Blizz's writers were so used to doing work on Warcraft where both Horde and Alliance had to be portrayed as the good guys or the respective player bases go absolutely ape shit So when it came time to do Starcraft 2, they tried to play up the 'everyone is a good guy' angle. But they weren't dealing with WoW players. Zerg players don't want to be the good guys. They want to be the absolute bastard devouring scourge
