Rabi Ribi is pretty damn good, I recommend it to anyone and everyone. It really does reward exploring and you can do a lot of areas in any order. Plus, the game has boss scaling to your level so you never go to a "wrong" area that's out of your league.

Apart from the first couple of minutes where you just need to get through the prologue, if you can get there then you can probably get to the end and fight the boss.

Hollow Knight
Ori and the Blind Forest is gorgeous but is much more focused on movement than combat, still great.
Axiom Verge isn't as good as the above but is a love letter to metroid if you want that style.

Also I, personally, LIKED the new Strider game.

People supposedly hate that game with the fury of a thousand suns, but I thought it was nice.
The really only bad part about the new Strider was the combat, and that's hardly the focus in a metroidvania game anyway. This is minus his redesign, because I felt his redesign into a techno-Hiryuu was kind of bland compared to magic robot Hiryuu of the first and second game.

Rogue Legacy.
Sure, it's randomly generated and there's no 'get X item to allow you to get to section Y', but it just feels so satisfying in a way a lot of games of that ilk don't.
