Speaking as a platinum games fan I was left incredibly disappointed.

The combat looks and feels great, but it is in no way challenging and literally halves your combat options when you start as 9S because he only has 1 weapon. The hacking mid-combat is easily the most jarring, flow-killing mechanic I've seen in an action game.

The sidequests are all tedious, there's fucking invisible walls EVERYWHERE. I got through halfway my 2nd playthrough with 9s and just had to stop, it almost feels like the game doesnt want me to enjoy playing it, so I'm not going to.

If this game didnt have some of the best animations ive ever seen and some great music to complement it I wouldnt have even looked twice after the demo

The combat is pretty varied since you can engage enemies from range with your robot that shoots bullets or go close quarters with different weapon types. You have katanas, great swords, spears, and hammers (maybe among other things)

So far Automata is my Game of the Year. I enjoyed the story with its themes and characters, I enjoyed the combat and I enjoyed the way it took advantage of the fact it was a game to tell its story. I know it has some shortcomings and that's fine.

That said I think some of the reaction to it was magnified due to it being one of the first, really solid AA titles to be released in quite a while where we got to have a game that had enough of a budget to manage some moderately decent production values but small enough so that it could do what it wanted without having to appease an overly inflated sale quota.

Also how the game was originally released without expecting to ever be able to release any DLC so we received an actual complete game was nice.

9S's playthrough is kind of a necessary evil to tell the story they wanted to tell, unfortunately. If you go from just the events of Route A to the beginning of Route C without ever seeing the events from his perspective you won't appreciate when he goes completely nuclear. And throwing in those details as some random exposition here and there would have been way worse than Route B.

I'm kinda sad that they missed out on A2 so much in favor of more 9S. I get that he's the main protagonist, but her backstory is actually pretty interesting if they bothered to explore it more. Seeing her change from kind hearted crybaby to Punished 2B would've been great, and would've help reflect 9S's transformation as well.

It's more implied than explicit, but I understood the game as placing the player as the emerging artificial intelligence between the two helper pods rather than actually being 9S or A2. Hence the whole switch off mechanic where the player is aggressively trying to save both characters as agreed upon in the independent pod dialogues. It becomes more obvious during the second to last boss fight where taking any damage switches characters. You lose control of 9S/A2 because the helper pod's connection has been interrupted.

I bought it on steam and played the first hour or so. Was definitely interesting but the combat felt simplistic or easy kinda compared to other P* games. Planning on going back to it once I 100% Zelda.

In all seriousness I agree with OP. It's definitely overrated, mostly because it just feels needlessly padded out and overstays it's welcome with the replays. Still memorable and probably one of my favorite soundtracks in ages. I don't regret it, but I was hoping to love it- instead I just liked it.

He is not even that depth when you play him in the 3rd Run, he was just angry.
Characters are clearly not a strong point in Automata.
You play like 1~2 hours with A2 and you see her one time before that.
2B can be a interesting after you know the truth, but that don't make her character depth in the actual game, she feel like a plot tool.
