But like said, WiiU had BW compatibility with Wii games, and thus also can run GC games natively (via homebrew software, as you need to run them as ISOs). Because I skipped Wii altogether, the WiiU was a fine investment in my books

I don't get why console makers don't design their consoles so that the games are compatible with future versions of the consoles. I guess Microsoft is doing that now with the Xbox One, but still, it'd be nice if console generations were more like the evolution from GameCube to Wii to WiiU. The Wii was essentially just a beefed up GameCube (same processor and GPU architecture with a very similar operating system), and the same for the WiiU and Wii.

It depends. Hardware compatibility isn't that expensive if your new console is just a beefed up version of your last one. Like the Wii and the GameCube. It's actually probably cheaper to make a new console a beefed up version of an old one if the architecture is easily available (like x86 or PPC).
