The world story and characters are okay, but it's just nothing special because at the end of the day, it's a video game, not a book or movie

You just spam mouse 1 in Witcher 3 and maybe use one of those Q abilities and that's about it

I never felt I was playing a well rounded video game nor was the story amazing

The open world concept can be applied in conjunction with a good story, it just needs to be written so that it doesn't remove any semblance of importance or weight from the overarching plotline or main quest. Morrowind did this, Skyrim did this, Fallout 3 NV did this, alot of open world games did this. Witcher 3 main plot line and the supporting narratives was written in a way that it doesn't make sense in a game that vast which you will ultimately try to explore. it ruins the narrative.
this is why the dlcs's are much more beloved than the main game, because the story line in those dlcs are alot more better paced and the story doesn't suffer.
