My 1TB Seagate is close to 6 years (maybe even more, not so sure) old now and every little thing makes my PC freeze.

Almost every single command makes programs unresponsive for a few seconds.
I just know the little fucker is going to give up on me in a few months but I would rather not buy a new HD so soon.
Is there anything I can do to give some second wind to my HD?

De-frag & check for errors. That's about it.
That being said, you sure it's your HDD that's failing?

>>375939342
my oldest (external) HDD is like 12 years old, and still works.
>>
Yeah, immerse it in acetone and ultrasound it for a night. It should really clean out all the memory things.
>>
>>375939380
I have a 5+ years old HDD in my main rig too and a couple older ones lying around, some even PATA, but lasting 6 years it's pretty good for a HDD, I wouldn't call that soon.
Besides a 1 TB HDD is like 50€ these days.
>>
>Seagate

Your own fault
>>
>>375939380
I'm almost sure, whenever something starts freezing the HD makes loud noises and Disk reading jumps to 100%.

I'm only afraid it will stop working altogether if I de-frag and check for errors, that happened to me in the past.
>>
>>375939610
WD cuck detected.
>>
>>375939610
Hey, what was I supposed to do, it was $5 cheaper than the Hitachi one.
>>
>>375939636
It's time to backup your data and move on.
Or you can always wait for a total loss, if that's more your thing.
>>
>>375939605
>but lasting 6 years it's pretty good for a HDD
dunno what kind of shit disks you've used, as my ancient circa 2003 bought PC's main C: -drive HDD still works, and is now serving in my grandparent's home machine.

>>375939636
Like said: backup like crazy, and just do it.
>>
>>375939787
>wait for a total loss
That's actually more my thing, my data is only 4chan image folders, games and anime crap anyways.

My motto is "only upgrade when stuff breaks".
>>
>>375939380
And how much use has it seen? An HD that's used for backups had much shorter workhours than your main drive
>>
Ok, I'm pretty much decided then...

Gonna backup my 8GB 4chan image folder and go back to using my HD until it breaks, then after that buy a Hitachi or WD one.

Thanks lads.
>>
Only noticed I posted this on /v/. Thought it was /g/.
>>
The quick answer is that it is on it's death bed and you'll need to backup before that happens.

A possible answer is to check your advanced power management under control panel and see if your hard disk is put on standby.

Daily, borderline 24/7 activity up until 2007, when I built a new machine, after which it worked as the secondary HDD all the way up until 2011, when I overhauled the entire system again. And after that, it literally sat in a cupboard, naked.

Do you just save every image you see?
>>
>>375939342
>>so soon
>>after 6 years

That's actually a pretty good run for a plated harddrive. Pretty much all hard drive makers only give you a 1 year warranty these days because they expect plated drives to die out after around 2 years.
>>
>>375939734
that graph is full of shit and has been disproven ages ago. yet /v/ and /g/ cling to it like glue and repost it every chance they get.
>>
>>375939636
If its making a loud noise already, backup the data, remove the disk and replace it. The damage might be mechanical now. That or get a better Power supply.
>>
Thanks for reminding me.

Are you sure your HDD is the problem? You didn't mentioned any constant sound and thats the first sign your HDD is going to die.

Download speedfan it'll tell you if your HDD is dying.

Mine (3-4 years old) just died.
It was gathering dust and I wanted to see what was on it, but it was almost unusable. Constantly read/write errors, I had to off/on it every 10 seconds.
And I hurt myself dismantling it to degauss the disks.

First, boot a linux image.

Apparently uncorrectable sector count means failure is imminent.
>>
>>375942230
You may need to use a 3rd party program to "mount" it on. Had that same issue once.

If all else fails, download a lightweight Linux distro. They got way better disk handling tools, and tend to solve these issues out of the box.
>>
>>375941651
>Nothing that exhentai doesn't already have.

Exhentai deletes a lot of content because of Fakku and other copyright bullshit.
I notice that in my favorites - a lot of galleries became unavailable.
They have some hidden content under paywall or their retarded points, not sure about it, but a regular exhentai user can't even see it.

The "retarded point system" is by how old your account is; more points you have the more you can see all the "deleted" shit.
Thought you were Mr. Oldfag.

You say that posting in a thread about hard drives failing. Meanwhile everything posted on the internet will be immortalized forever.
>>
>>375944004
They have points you can get from some retarded mini games, daily visits and other shit I never cared about.

I've been using exhentai for about 10 years and I have the same amount of points.
They delete content like Kairakuten magazines because of Fakku copyrights so fuck off about it and your points.
At this point it's easier to get access to Chinese paywall forums where people post the same magazines and other Japanese content and never delete it.
>>
>>375939342
Unless there's very heavy computer usage, that's not that old.

My hitachi is reporting 1214d 12h poweron hours, and most of the time it's switched off.
>>
>>375943881
>85 uncorrectable sectors

Yeah nah shit's going down m8.
>>
just wait for the next sale and buy a new harddrive then. even 4tb externals are $110 normally.
>>
>>375944312
I have a drive that has 56K hours on it and a pair with 54K. The former is about 2300 days, from my experience, it's easier to get high hour counts than it is to make a drive last 5+ years, because the drives tend to break when they are turned on/off.
>>
>>375942041
I've always heard WD and hitachi was the most reliable. I know hitachi makes commercial grade HDDs
>>
>>375945674
Hitachi is fine. For the record, they're the same thing now: WD bought Hitachi's storage division.
>>
>>375945674
Everyone makes "commercial" grade HDDs. I also think you mean enterprise grade, because Hitachi is more or less gone from the consumer market.
>>
>>375939992
I've got a 250gb Maxtor that went in my first ever build and that's seen 8 years of constant use and still absolutely fine. It's now in the lounge pc as a media centre drive getting daily .
>>
>>375945985
Yeah thats what i meant. I typically only ever see hitachi drives in workstations, servers, or older thinkpads
>>
>>375942041
Hitachi actually make very good drives.

But their deskstar series were contracted out, earned the name deathstar and the reputation stuck
>>
>>375946227
That's cuz WD, the new owner of Hitachi Storage is not interested in Hitachi drives competing with their own in the consumer space. In the enterprise market, having Hitachi around makes sense because the buyers there are very brand loyal. Much more so than the average consumer.

The merge is almost fully complete, though. So in the future maybe Hitachi brand will be completely scrapped, don't know.
