The best tip for staying in first is aggressively going for protection items. If you have a coin item and an empty second item, picking up another item box will always gives you a defensive item. Alternatively, a double item box will almost always give you a coin and a defensive item.

Bomb ombs work to block shells when held behind you, but only when you're going at top speed in 200cc. Maybe 150cc as well, I'm not sure.

Some people say they cycle through items for horns but I find I can generally build up enough of a lead for the one blue shell to not matter that much and the red shell protection is more important.

Rainbow Road 7 was great. I've never played Super Circuit or SNES Kart but the worst one for me has to be Wii Rainbow Road. Like I said, you have to be going fast for it to work. I don't think it's a top speed issue because I play Drybones and don't use speed-maximizing kart parts. Coins could very well be the deciding factor.

Here's a hot tip lads: in 200cc if you use a shroom on the ramp shortcut at Shyguy Falls while drifting just right,you fly super far and land right in front of the finish line, past the ramps and shit that come before it.
