Thanks for the code!
Now please spend money for skins and unlocks in our shitty gambling games!
>>
That source code could have been so valuable. What a tard.
>>
>>375933998
Not really. The BW engine is objectively shit and nothing good would have come out of it. It's not like open sourcing ID Tech engines that are actually open sourced when they're relevant.
>>
Stuff like that is easily worth multiple thousand dollars

Of course you can't just sell it on ebay but overall that guy didn't get the best out of his discovery.
>>
I can't imagine being that much of a cuck in my wildest dreams.

I mean, this guy is more disgusting than Anthony Birch. I don't even give a fuck about Starcraft, but what an absolute slap in the face to anyone who cares about it.
>>
>>375934572
>thousand
He got a fully paid trip to Blizzcon along with a bunch of other shit he can easily flip off on ebay.
You need to ask yourself how much is the source code to an ancient game worth.

There have already been recorded instances of those dev kits, they're not extremely rare, and the chance of it actually having some useful documentation on it was about 0.001%.

The best you could reasonably hope is some dogshit third party code for an imagine babies port.

Stop believing everything you read on fucking Reddit, kids.

>>
>>375934098
You're a fucking pleb of the highest degree

Broodwar is THE single greatest game of our age, only held back by fucking blizzard. Leaking the source code would allow the true fans to open source it and make it even better. Flawless, even.
>>

Unless you think the community can somehow magically fix all that shit.

>>
>>375935595
Because it's easy clickbait money, a harmless story like that is going to gather an assload of views and upboats. The company is happy, the intended audience is happy because the guy did "the right thing", the guy is happy because he gets some stuff and a moment of e-fame, and the website owners are happy because they just got some good $$$ for five minutes worth of regurgitating PR garbage.
>>
>>375935859
Sold through the right channels, it would have easily fetched 5 figures. You don't know how much this kind of one-off rare shit goes through, and for such a seminal title?

I mean, it would never have seen the light of day again if he sold it, but at least he'd make some decent money.
>>
All you children have such disdain for Blizzard, but if the shoe was on the other foot, you would be singing a different tune. If it was your hard work and intellectual property, you wouldn't want it to be leaked out in the open. The guy had no right to auction off the source code to the highest bidder, or to give it to the community to spite Blizzard, as penance for whatever slight you think they made against you in the past. The guy did the right thing by returning the code to the company that owns the rights to it, and he was rewarded as a gesture of good will. It's literally nothing, except to serve as good PR for Blizzard.
>>

How fucking stupid do you have to be
>>
This was the only smart move he could have done.
Trying to sell it on the darknet is asking for troubles and information brokers would have given him jackshit for it because it's such an old game.
The best way to legally make money off of this is to give it back and hope something in return. Trying to blackmail Blizzard would have landed him in jail even faster, like the Valve hackers
Releasing it for free is something only the ultimate cuck would have done.
>>
>>375936090

The disc was reported as stolen property, it still belonged to Blizzard. Even if it wasn't, it's contents are still copyrighted, which means that sharing its contents or selling the disc would be illegal, just as uploading an ISO of a game you bought or selling a pirated copy of a game would also be illegal.
Even if he did absolutely nothing with the disc afterwards he could still get sued by Blizzard and be forced to give it back to them. Returning the disc was the right choice.

Retards.
If it wasn't worth anything Blizzard wouldn't hype up their shitty remastered so much. There is lots of money to be made. And the internet suddenly having the ability to create something better than Blizzard would be a massive desaster for Blizzard.
>>
>>375936240
I don't understand your logic. By virtue of the company being Blizzard, they deserve to have their code leaked. But if we apply that same morality to you, would it be okay? If you were a game designer, would it be okay to leak your code? If not, then why is it okay to leak Blizzard's code?
>>
>>375935563

I'm just trying to give the situation the Golden Rule test. Are you implying that after a business reaches a certain size, they cease to care about their products? Since Blizzard was bought by Activision, they deserve to have their source code leaked? It's childish. Starcraft is the most pirated game of all time and anyone who wants to play it on demand, can.

Isn't blizzard the company we all love? I and many others here are eagerly awaiting Starcraft Remastered and I can imagine how much this would have hurt its sales. Also shoutout to blizzard for being awesomesauce and inviting OP to blizzcon. Keep being awesome, blizzard!
