Why game industry can't make games like Silent Hill (1-4) anymore?
>>
Because Team Silent were GOAT.
>>
Because streamer jumpscare horror makes more money
>>
>>375933309
Why game industry can't make games like Pong anymore?
>>
>>375933926
but jump scares are actually scary

SH had some good atmosphere but it wasn't actually frightening
>>
>>375934542
says you. sh3 scared the fuck out of me
>>
>>375934542
I find the games to be scary. There's quite a bit more merit to providing horror with context as opposed to a dead body falling from the ceiling and a loud music cue to catch you off guard, or whatever jump scare mechanisms people use. It just feels like low hanging fruit.
>>
>>375934760
>>375934865

I don't find silent hill games scary because the monsters aren't actively hunting you. Whenever you enter an area where they're spawned, the game makes it apparent that you need to fight

In a properly done 'jumpscare' game, the monster uses stealth, sneaks up on you and catches you off guard. That's why you jump - because you're not expecting to be attacked
>>
Anyone got the Silent Hill guide pastebin? I want to try these games.
>>
>>375934865
> spamming spooky music = merit
>>
>>375934542
Jump scares are scary the second they happen, but they don't have the ability to affect you years later. I haven't actually played the SH games, but when I'm thinking about the horrir movie that affected me the most, it's the Shining and not some jumpy shit.
>>
>>375935257
please go.
>>
>>375933309
You can try the Siren series.
>>
>>375933309
>proto artsy walking simulators
>>
>>375935450
But the last hour of the Shining was scary because you knew Jack was in the hotel, but you didn't know when he was going to jump out and kill somebody

The threat OF the jumpscare makes it scary

Silent hill doesn't have that. The mechanics make it clear that the AI isn't complex enough to pull that off
>>
>>375935652
So what, is Clocktower your favorite horror game then?
>>
>post fav songs

People played SH games years ago. New gamers would hate it if they were released today. The same thing would happen with Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space. New waves of people came to the hobby, and first, they don't like horror, and second, they don't like hard games. So here we are. Industry can't make survival horrors because there is no market for them.
>>
>>375935863
>Now its time to end this.

There is never going to be voice acting like that ever again is there?
>>
>>375935773
I like it a lot. It could have been done a bit better.

The movies I find scary hinge on the monster stalking from the shadows: Halloween, Alien, The early F13 movies

The monster or killer sneaks up on the victim. The jump scare comes from catching the prey off guard. Without that tension, I'm not scared
>>
>>375935976

It's better this way. Sad thing is, I want to play SH2 again so bad. But I don't have a working ps2. If only the remastered version, even being trash, was retrocompatible on the One...
>>
>>375936332

PC version dawg.
>>
why do people hold Silent Hill 1-3 and Resident Evil 1-3 as the standard for horror gameplay? why is the parameters of assessing what is and isn't good, and what actually 'is' horror, so narrow? is it because these were your first exposure to horror fiction as kids?
>>
>>375936749
Because they were good. Other games can also be good as well, but they were the break outs in the console horror genre. Its like comparing every good sci-fi horror movie to Alien, its just going to happen because they set the standard.
>>
>>375935257
>>375934542
>I need scary monsters to hunt me to find game scary
Kids these days lack skill of immersion.
>>
>>375935652
>The threat OF the jumpscare makes it scary
No. Jumpscares can be utilized (in small numbers) to create a feeling of uncertainty and blow off some of the gathered up tension, but focusing on them? That's not scary. That's just startling the player.

Which is why scares built with atmospheric elements are miles more effective. Jumpscares are one-moment things. Well done disturbing mood does not leave you head even after you turn off the game, and will haunting you for the rest of the night at best.

>>375935930
>New gamers would hate it if they were released today.
You are totally wrong. I've gotten tons of people to play the series' original games for the very first time in the on-going decade, and they've been impressed and engaged to them for real.

Or if you want a bit more wider and recent example, the record-breaking sales figures of REmake HD & RE0 HD are good enough proof that "oldschool" horror works and sells well.

download the PC port. Check the SH PC Guide at : >>375936461 to set 'em up properly for modern machines, and DL 'em from these links:

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

>>375936749
because they're the spawners and highlight of the whole genre?

kys kid.
At least go play Fatal Frames & Forbidden Siren games. After that, Afraid Of Monsters:DC and Cry Of Fear.
>>
>>375938675
I don't mean jump scares on triggers (which the SH games actually have). You know, you're walking down a hallway and something pops out at you because you triggered the pre-planned scare

I mean an enemy which actively uses stealth to hide from you and plans it's attacks to catch you off guard.
>>
>>375933309
Because of western millennial pseudo-gamers, who can't afford a PC.

>muh HD HD HD
>muh graphics
>muh want to shoot things
>muh and need regen health
>muh want to see through walls

Those morons do not understand that HD HD HD and niche horror game do not fit together, that's why actual survival horror is also dead since Piss3.
>>
>>375939107
Oh well. What i mean is after outlast 2 i felt like going back to something like silent hill. I finished all those games. Both Cof and Aom were fantastic but there isnt much like it.

Banned Memories, Ashen Falls, and Year of the Ladybug will be the SUCCESSORS of Silent Hill!

If they're young, you could have guessed that.

>PS4 trophies
because 4 teh playas fags consist of all the players out there? Hell, the HD port was released even on prev-gen consoles.

>>375942065
I got my old Xbox-fag dudebro "friend" to give it a shot just few months ago, and he actually enjoyed it. And he pretty literally only plays shit like BF1, NHL, and racing crap.

Also, you're part of the problem: PLAYING is always vastly different thing from WATCHING. Already learned this at very young age.
