I really have no idea how to explain it if it's not immediately evident to your ears. Just listen to the link I posted and observe how it's different from the rhythm of the normal Chocobo theme. You can count "1-2-3-4-5" along with the rhythm and it lines up, but if you try to only count to 4, you're gonna get desynched with the music.

Listen to the metronome I added. The "ting" marks the beginning of a measure, and the "clicks" mark the beat. The song goes "ting-click-click-click-click" so the time signature is 5/4. If you were to just do a 4/4 beat so that the metronome goes "ting-click-click-click" then the "ting" wouldn't hit the beginning of every measure anymore. It would just sound randomly scattered through the song.

Also notice that at 0:13, the beat shifts to 6/4. The metronome now adds an additional click and goes "ting-click-click-click-click-click". Maybe you can hear the difference better in this example, since it changes partway through.

I'd say try to isolate the drum beat from the rest of the instruments if you're actively trying to figure out a rhythm and not just passively enjoying music.

Also, the vast majority of music you listen to is in 4/4 so it should sound very balanced. If you feel like something about the rhythm is off from what you're used to hearing, try to figure out where the measure starts, and then count the beats out on your fingers.

A good way to figure out where the measure starts is to listen to the musical patterns. If there are background melodies that are repeated, they're usually repeated at the start of each measure, or every two measures, with variations depending on key and chord changes. It's to do with how the bars are broken up. Sure you could put a 5/4 into 4/4 without changing the notes and it would just take more bars, but most things in 5/4 are broken up differently to how they would be in 4/4 and this is how you can hear it. It's like how 8/8 could potentially sound the same as 4/4, but it generally won't because the beat will be something like 3+3+2.

In my experienced opinion, I hear a measure of 4/4, then 5/4, and two more in 4/4 before the entire phrase restarts based on the first bit of the song. You could also write it as a measure of 9/4, then two bars of 4, but the smaller the measure, the happier the reader.

Time signature greatly affects how music feels to listen to. It's steeped in music theory so you'd have to look it up on your own if you can't feel it naturally.

A lot of people don't know how to count measures or instinctively find the "down" beat if they've never played music. If you try tapping along to a lot of the songs ITT you'll find you "stumble" or lose your place sometimes when time signatures shift.

It's technical stuff that allows composers to make songs that otherwise don't fit into a single time signature. All about presentation and how they want the song to sound. If you aren't interested in how it works you can just appreciate it without knowing.

Now if you count each thing as a number, you get

before it happens again. If you keep counting 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4 throughout the entire song you'll find it always changes on the 1.

We Will Rock You is in 4/4 because each measure is made up of 4 quarter notes. The speed of each beat is the tempo of the piece.

Another babby example is the black knight theme from Fire Emblem Path of Radiance:

This one's in 3/4 - it has 3 quarter beats to a bar. The first brass note is 3 beats long, then 1 beat of a different note, then 2 beats rest.

Now consider the mission impossible theme:

The song doesn't properly start until just before the 0:04 mark, but then the beat begins. The mission impossible theme is in 5/4. Each measure is made up of two notes for 1 and a half beats each, then 2 notes for 1 beat each. You can count along by breaking the first two notes into "one two three" each, then "one two" twice.

Now, notice how in this case we're not counting the entire beat each time - we're counting it in halves. This means Mission Impossible's 5/4 time signature could be written as 10/8 as well - there's 10 8ths to the bar.

The last one I'll do is 7/8, which tends to be most people's introduction to compound times.

Try to do a 12/8 and make a ton of triplets.
Having a 12/8 triplet-focused treble clef mixed with a 4/4 quarter-focused bass clef sounds great, although it's tricky to play.
You could also go for something more impressionistic with massive sustained arpeggios.

Just listen to something you like, plagiarize it, and change until it's not plagiarism already, it just works.

I've been listening to some tracks and can clearly distinguish where the "loop" in the rythm is. In this case it loops at the 3rd beat so I'm guessing this will be a 3/something.

Am I on the right track?

You're better off starting with something relatively simple like the mario kart one in >>375955226

Try counting to 5 from every voice "ha" from slightly before 0:02. You will only line up perfectly with the 1st, 3rd and 4th string bass note because the first two notes are 1 and a half beats long, so it doesn't get back into sync until beats 4 and 5.
