Have we passed the peak of gaming aesthetics?
Then
>No or little post processing and filters
>High contrast between light and dark areas which accentuates lighting and shadows
>Textures use photosource as base, but hand edited to look as clean as possible when downsampled to their in-game resolutions
>Art styles and assets were memorable. You can take just small screenshots of portions of a wall in MGS or Oblivion, and anyone will be able to recognize the game.
Now
>Instagram filters kill all colors
>Post-processing used to cover up lazy art
>Textures are just scanned in photosources lazily slapped onto of a meshes with no regard for if the objects make physical sense, or if they fit in with the rest of the scene
>Lighting is more "subtle" and "realistic", but this really means that basically everything is flat
>Because everyone is photosourcing everything, your art looks like everyone elses. You can't distinguish a cave wall in Tomb Raider from one in Uncharted.
>>375913153
in short: yes.
your comparison is from ass though.
No, I think a lot of developers are still using a lot of interesting and varied art styles still. I can definitely tell apart a cave wall in BotW as opposed to Journey or Overwatch.
You can say that Tomb Raider and Uncharted look the same, ergo all modern games look the same, but Uncharted is literally just Tomb Raider with a dude. And there were plenty of same looking games back when Oblivion was released, or MGS3. That was nearing the height of brown n bloom
>>375913153
>2013 game
>"""""""""""""now"""""""""""""""
>>375913562
not OP, but to me, majority of post-2010s AAA games look the same.
Pic related still applies frighteningly well.
I miss the mid-00s "clean", unobscured yet already very modern visuals. Nowadays, it feels like we've gone back to early 1900s movie color-filters, using them to create "atmosphere".
>>375913153
Oblivion's E3 footage made me sweat back when I first saw it. Too bad the game wasn't even close to that at launch.
>>375913649
>Prey 2
How does this image make you feel?
>>375914880
>Prey 2
it looked shit, get over it
>Haven't played oblivion since release
>Can't replay it because it's objectively the worst looking and controlling TES game to date
I'm no stickler for graphics but we all have to have a standard and Oblivion is just one of the worst looking games of all time (even though when it came out it was considered some of the best)
>>375914880
prey 2 sucked
>>375914976
NPCs in oblivion are especially ugly as fuck.
>>375914926
Does it actually look that good though?
No?
>>375914926
Excited for the first 3D console Dragonquest game since 8 even if the main characters are all plain as fuck looking
>>375914880
It's ok, that piece of garbage was trashed where it belonged.
>>375914926
Urge to fap to monster rape.
>>375914976
Visuals are not a problem, you can fix it with mods. The shallowness of the game is the real problem.
>>375914976
Just install a few mods. The Face Overhaul is enough to fix the NPCs, and that's the only GLARING flaw. The rest is perfectly bearable.
>>375915018
Not only that but the filter they have just makes it look like you smeared Vaseline all over your eyes
Everything that is done today can be done on either the idtech 2 or 3 engine and at only a fraction of the processing power.
Pathetic that games today can't render dynamic lights without crashing your system, absolutely pathetic.
>>375915074
>>375915086
If skyrim looks like shit even with mods then oblivion will look even shittier.
Try again, sweetie.
>>375915202
A: Skyrim looks fine though? I mean it's a garbage shallow game, and I hate it, but especially modded it looks pretty good
B: I didn't say it would make it good, I said it would make it bearable.
>>375915312
>especially modded
Nullifies your entire point.
>>375915202
>If skyrim looks like shit even with mods
Skyrim looks great with mods though. I don't think anyone denies this.
>>375915202
Sure are fucking witty.
>The shallowness of the game is the real problem.
>>375913153
Are you literally 12 years old? Do you not remember the brown and bloom era in the early 00s? Aesthetics go into and out of style in a cycle, this is nothing new.
>>375916123
Maybe in screenshots but if you actually play it, the engine can barely handle it and the pop in literally happens 10 yards in front of you.
Also nothing fixes the ugly textures in the game.
>>375913153
>>375913310
>>375913649
Stop playing trash western games, problem solved. There has never been more visual variety in Japanese games, aka the only ones that matter.
>>375916294
Are you a consolefag by any chance?
Skyrim doesn't have a problem with pop-ins. The engine on Oldrim is a problem, but it only results in things like FPS drops because there's too many NPCs, shit flying everywhere because you went over 60fps, or crashing from too many animations.
>nothing fixes ugly textures
This is incomprehensible considering there's like fifty different 4k texture repacks for all the various shit in the game.
>>375916559
>Skyrim doesn't have a problem with pop ins
Stopped reading there, you're obviously retarded.
>>375913153
OP is literally so autistic that he complains about cave walls being similar in modern games.
>completely disregards the amazing sunset scenery in tomb raider that happens just after exiting the cave.
Do you really think that would look this good in your rats ass vanilla oblivion graphics?
>>375913649
The iron sights in Far Cry 3 were so bad holy shit.
>>375916409
>>375916294
Either you took no effort in modding and optimizing your game, your computer is horrible, or you're just fucking retarded.
Maybe a combination of all three?
>>375913649
Yeah, let's compare the dudebro casual shooters, which, regardless of year, are basically the same, thus proving your point!
>>375916803
It doesn't. The only thing I can even think you're referring to is LOD, which is also fixed by mods and you can adjust yourself according to your hardware.
A game I would consider actually having a pop-in problem is Subnautica. Objects will phase into existence when you're two feet in front of them.
>>375915178
I have a 7 year old card and merely working in UDK with the shadows and most lighting off I can only scratch 15fps. In an empty scene.
Meanwhile I can run idtech 2 or 3 games at 60fps no problem that look as good as anything today.
remember when games had colour
>>375916294
Gamebroy isn't advanced enough to have pop ins you retard. The best they could come up with was cells. It is literally incapable of streaming objects/textures and loads everything in your cell at once before you can even see your character.
>>375915178
no lol, lighting in idtech 2 or 3 looks shit compared to any modern games lighting you sperg cunt
>>375917778
The most recent big empire sim, Civ 6, constantly got shit on for having too much colour.
>>375917778
So do I.
>>375914204
>FEAR 1
literally the last truly good first-person shooter. rip.
>>375919405
the STALKER trilogy and Serious Sam 3 were superb as well, though vastly different in style.
>>375914204
>>375919405
I remember my first shootout and the shock of seeing the bullet holes in the wall behind the dead soldiers.
>>375913649
Why wouldn't you aim down in an FPS, what's this trying to prove.
>>375919131
gamers will never be happy with anything
>>375916409
Stay mad senpai!
>>375914204
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves this style. I even mod F:NV with high-res textures and a mod to get rid of the orange hue. No ENB shit needed it already looks amazing after that imo.
>>375913153
for environmental details, yes. for character models, i feel like we are close to the best they can get. everyone oved gta 5, but i couldnt get over how cartoony the character models looked. it felt like they didnt imrove them from 4 at all, and 4 was better in this regard because it was a huge step up from san andreas or the psp games. maybe it was the skin tones or the textures, but i ddidnt like them. the clothes always feels to big and weird. not a year and a half later, arkham city shows up and has the best in game character models i think ive ever seen. i hated the game, but this aspect still diserves praise. i think rise of the tomb raider also had great character models, but i havent played that game first had, so i cant say.
if you want games with unique art styes, i'd reccomend scanner sombre.
>>375920347
oh yeah it was beautiful. I had to overcome my fear of scary movies and games to play it because it looked so cool
>>375914204
Early 2000's look was better to be honest even though I hold FEAR and Doom 3 in special places because of the fancy lighting and particle effects they have.
>>375922868
True that.
And while its lighting was way simpler, HL2 packed great art-style and animations that are still impressive to this day.
>>375920464
Because I don't like to interrupt the pace of my game with such a boring ass mechanic?
>>375921254
That looks fucking terrible man.
I think you are just gay for slavic looking guys.
>>375914880
Why are people so upset about this game? It would probably suck massive balls.
>>375924515
you even play the game bruv?
>>375913153
>be on pc
>can turn on and off what you want
>console shitters are stuck with cancer like motion blur, chromatic abortion, bloom and lensflares and shitty post process effects and blurry AA
>>375917778
but this looks fucking retarded why would those giant statues be coloured?
>>375920696
Thank you based Loli-Chan! I will!
>>375927521
>he doesn't color his giant statues
haha yeah man 2006 graphics were much better than modern graphics
>>375926860
Why does motion blur exist? It makes your game look objectively worse.
>>375927521
Most statues were painted or ornamented.
>>375928623
Top slide unironically looks better.
>>375930792
I dont believe you

It's true. What the hell? Didn't expect I'd learn something on 4chan of all places today.

1 is the only Prey that matters
>>375924390
... is this lowti3rgod?
>>375931162
Not just statues but a lot of ancient ruins were colored too.
Also old churches and cathedrals.
>>375931316
Prey 1 is trash.
Cool concept, though.
>>375928815
It hides low framerates in console games (when combined with smooth and slow stick movement for the camera)
>>375913153
>top
>vast open world with complex mechanics and physics
>bottom
>shallow linear experience filled with scripted events
kill yourself OP
>>375914926
_ ____ __ ____ ____ _____
No. Games do look better. Switch off the post-processing, and your complaint comes down to "realistic games look more like reality".
To which I say, duh.
>>375913649
I remember when I first saw this pic in like 2011 I agreed and thought it was making a clever observation about the state of gaming.
Now that I'm less of a retard, I notice only 3 of these games are very similar. Outside of simply being in the same genre, the rest are quite different from each other, some just in game mechanics, but some also in story and setting. And one of them of course wasn't even released.
So was their complaint just that they don't like FPS games? Pretty shallow criticism to make, but then it is Cracked so I shouldn't be surprised.
>>375923798
because it was made by a tight group of talented game developers and not a horde of talentless game degree certified sjws
Original DMC4 looks really crisp and runs at 1 billion fps.
>>375933751
To some extent, it's still a valid complaint. The industry tends to chase trends, and using iron sights instead of crosshairs was definitly a new trend, that everyone jumped on. It's a good example for an industry that just can't think for itself and instead goes with anything that promises a safe bet.
>>375916409
Ching chong ping pong you too, faggot.
>>375928623
top:
can actually read the needed information
unit icons distinguish their historical and game intended battle role.
no floating health bars
renders a landscape that references the location rather than a "scene", associating the battle to the strategic map objectives of the empires involved
bottom:
higher poly count
higher texture res
>>375934742
Being fair, the bottom is only hard to read because it's badly downscaled.
Oblivion only looked good when looking at very specific things.
A lot of it was super rough, especially faces. The art design for the high level armours (elven, glass, orcish, dwarvern etc) were all pretty terrible.
I will say, the inside of that jail was pretty impressive at the time. I remember being like 10 when it first came out and thinking "holy shit. It's basically real life"
