I know its just a children's game so there probably is no answer but what was the goal in the first two games? In Earthbound the aliens are trying to corrupt humanity before Gygas's arrival for some reason, but in the first game the're just fuckin around.

The aliens have always planned an attack and giegue was supposed to be the leader. But then George and Maria got abducted and he started having feelings for the humans, so they postpone it and train him more. The reason why he offers ninten a place on the mother ship was due to his relation to Maria. After he gets his shit kicked in the aliens realize giegue is weak because of his feelings, so he destroys his mind to become gygas, but it takes time to complete. To make the whole process easier for them, the aliens start corrupting the population before gygas is complete to ensure they win.

I always just imagined it as the aliens abducted humans for whatever reason then took them back to their world where they simply lived as second class citizens in a humorous kind of way., eventually adopting an alien orphan. But then George broke the planets law by learning how to use PSI. Gigue probably worked his way to the top, driven by the guilt of being a part of "the traitor family".
