I didn't mention that it was a positive. The OP only mentions that Japanese is an inherent negative for no real reason other than it's Japanese. There's no reason for that to be the case, unless you just hate Japanese things because they are Japanese, and not because of any other underlying/overlying qualities. I can tell that games like Conception 2 are fucking awful because they are shitty games, but the aesthetic is interesting enough that it at least convinced me to attempt it. I couldn't tell that Mount and Blade was even decent until a few dozen hours later, because the visuals are unfathomably hideous on every single conceivable level, and after extensive play, I've come to realize that it's an amazing game. Conception being Japanese had nothing to do with how shit it was, Conception being a shit game was explicitly why it was shit. Mount and Blade not being Japanese had nothing to do with what made it good, Mount and Blade being a versatile game with excellent mechanics is what made it good.

PS2 was the best time to be a gamer because it was the last major upgrade in terms of technology.

2017 is a new era desu. Japan's getting a feel of open world now.
My vote is on 32 bit era to to include Saturn games.

Brave Fencer Musashi and BoF4 are still some of my favorite games. I really don't see how someone could say there's a better console for JRPGs than the PS1. Granted I still need to play through a lot of SNES and any Genesis JRPGs.

PS1 was the peak for me, it had the most experimental games by far and basically defined the excess of the genre; 40 hour games became 80. PS2 definitely followed in the same footsteps but the increased budget costs meant rpgs were not as common or expansive.

snes, ps1 and ps2 were the golden age for jrpgs. everything now is weeb shit cute girls doing cute things. same story with anime, just go look at /a/. around 2005 japan as a whole went to absolute shit.

SNES was good, but they still had kept stories and characters very basic, and weren't at the phase of experimenting with battle systems. PS1 brought the most creativity in storytelling, and early battle system experimentation. PS2 they either tried to recreate what made them great in the PS1 era, or simply died out. Ever since it's been either run away to handhelds and make stuff that's on the level of middle-tier SNES games, cater to a very particular niche, or copying elements of popular WRPGs. The exceptions to that being DQ and FF, which survive on name alone.
So PS1. It's not even remotely close.

I quit playing Tales after Legendia. The only one I liked was Eternia.

SNES to PS1 is the golden age, PS2 had some great games but it quickly went down hill.

Also, there's nothing with games that are full of pastel colors, chicks and obviously Japanese, the problem is the market being completely flooded with them.

I feel like 4th gen was the golden age of JRPGs. The Super Nintendo is pretty much known for being THE JRPG system. And, it has even more than most people think once you factor in Japan exclusives. The Genesis had significantly less JRPGs, but still had gems like the Shining series, the Phantasy Star series, Sword of Vermilion, etc.

The 5th gen comes at a close second. The PS1 pretty much brought JRPGs to the western mainstream, and had a lot of experimental games that pushed the genre forward. The Saturn actually had a lot of JRPGs too, but a lot of them never got localized. Luckily, we did get stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force 3 (well, the first part of it at least). The N64 only really had Ogre Battle 64, Hybrid Heaven, and Paper Mario.

The 6th gen comes third, of these choices. The PS2 had an impressive JRPG library, and the games had enhanced presentation, but the games themselves didn't really innovate that much. The Dreamcast only really had Grandia 2, the Evolution series, and Skies of Arcadia, and all of these games ended up ported to other systems. The GameCube had the Lost Kingdoms series, the Baten Kaitos series, Fire Emblem 9, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Phantasy Star Online Episode 3, Tales of Symphonia, and Paper Mario 2. The Xbox Hueg had practically no JRPGs, unless you count Phantom Dust. There was a Japan exclusive JRPG, but apparently it was a single player MMO
