Why does Oblivion look so much "cleaner" than modern

Why does Oblivion look so much "cleaner" than modern games?

Its interiors looked amazing. Where it lacked was character models and distant exteriors.

Newer games seem to have flip flopped. Character models and distant lands look amazing, but interiors and anything up close looks like ass.

There's been a growing trend for games to have filters take place of color design and texture detail

Oblivion may be ugly as fuck, even for its time, but it's better than letting an automated process deal with all you shit.

the only innovation nowadays is in quantity, things like more advanced physics, more objects, more draw distance and so forth
the actual visuals of games haven't really leaped forward appreciably in like a decade, just more bells and whistles

I think you mean "lighting". Shaders are different.
Oblivion also had a mode that looked like that, you could turn it on in console with TLB.
