I don't think Sega has anything to worry about if they let the Mania team keep doing their thing. Sonic's modern design may not be used as widely if Sonic Team keeps fucking up, however. Classic Sonic may as well be the franchise's "golden boy" at this point.

There's been 3 boost games now. They're not reviving anything. Generations had some fanfare only because the entire game was literally riding on nostalgia.

Sonic's image will be restored with sonic mania. No annoying friends. No cringe story. No boost pads. Just actual platforming sprite gameplay, you know, like when the games were good
