Is VR meme dead already? Haven't heard much about it and prices are still relatively the same as they were upon release.

Anyone have a VR headset? What do you use it for?
>>

last thing I heard was zenimax out jewd facebook and they pull the oculus off the shelves or something, not like oculus was good
>>
We'll find out this E3.
>>
>>375778174
There's still a bunch of games coming out but they are more expensive than people thought. Occulus still stealing exclusives. My Vive sits in the box most of the time. Ask away.

The gimmick is impressive for 10 minutes but the resolution is shit and the lack of AAA support really kills it.
Maybe when you can have 4k res per eye and retroactive AAA game support.

Zenimax sued them. Nothing tangible has resulted though. The trial is being dragged on.

They're just dragging it on. Likely it will be years before it ends, and Zenimax will give up before they get anything.

Actuallly, there has been an influx of games within the past month with more in sight in the next 2 months.

PSVR owner here. I didn't really use it until the end of last month when I got tired of looking at it and not in it. I'm glad I did because I didn't give it a chance, but it's great.

Then again, I did also enjoy the Vita; take my word with a grain of salt. I seem to not know when something I enjoy is bad.
>>
>>375778174
It's a slow boil people keep releasing shit for it and I keep buying it. I'm really hoping valve drops something this year for the thing. The only real reason its out of the box is the porn.
>>
>>375779346
>Occulus still stealing exclusives.
Huh, really? I assumed devs would be more interested in the Vive. Is OR using their Facebook money to buy exclusive rights?
>>
>>375781609
The latter.
>>
I am interested in VR but I'm afraid I'll have motion sickness. Some fps games already make me feel sick
>>
>>375781609
>I assumed devs would be more interested in the Vive

The matter isn't what the devs are interested in but if their interests can be justified to their business/employers. The fact of the matter is that VR isn't and won't bring in big profits and that's a problem for most studios unless the only thing they want to create is software on a much smaller scale than what they'd do for a regular game.

The only ones doing VR right now are the ones who can justify it - meaning they see it as an investment in R&D, IP, publicity, etc, that will eventually be beneficial to them rather than earn them short term profits.
>>
>>375782124
Doesn't the Vive have a bigger install base?

I actually have no clue, I just assumed.
>>
>>375778174
the true success of VR does not belong to gamers. It belongs to porn, right now they have POV VR but when the porn industry makes 360 environments that you can walk around the room and watch people getting fucked on an entirely new level.
>>
>>375779468
You do realize you could have tried one out and looked up a game library on google and had the exact same experience correct?
>>
It'll come back when Algon Soft. makes a fully interactive virtual city.
>>
>>375782512
We don't have any solid data on this, but estimates are that it is, due to things like wider reach in places where Oculus doesn't sell, and dedicated products and services for businesses. Oculus actually doesn't allow their headsets to be used for businesses but HTC does, so that's one big market.

With that in mind, sales might be more even in the consumer-gaming market in NA, but the Vive probably still has the lead.

With that said, the problem is still that the market isn't big enough. PSVR for example by almost all estimates has more users than Vive and Rift combined. Studios still can't expect to profit enough for it to be justifiable for their business, unless they see it as an investment in future ventures.
>>
I like my gear vr with my s7 edge. I play Nintendo games and ps1 games in VR
>>
>>375782906

And assuming they have the money/means, of course.
>>
>>375778174
I work in the IT department in a college. We have Vives, Occulus', and HoloLenses that we loan out to staff. They are fun and gimmicky but will never take off at their current prices. I see them as being a party item, with the same novelty factor as a WiiU
>>
>>375779810
I'm interested in the Vive more than the Oculus anyhow.
>>
>>375779948
>What did you mean by this
As in, if no VR games get revealed at E3, it's dead.
>>
>>375782906
It's kinda sad, PSVR is technologically speaking the least exciting of the 3, but they really nailed adoption, and making it the most attractive option for devs looking at VR.
>>
>>375782737
>watch people getting fucked
>it's like you're really there in the room while the sexy girl is getting fucked by a stud

>>
I won't care about VR until they give up the novelty of "complete" immersion and just allow me to play a regular game with a regular controller and headtracking for the most comfy first-person experience.

The only people who can afford VR are people who have jobs and these devs are fucked if they think I want to jump through hoops like a monkey to play my game after a hard day of work.

The PSVR is actually very good technically speaking. The only thing it doesn't perform well in is tracking, because it's limited by old hardware, and also the graphics of the experiences themselves, because they're limited to the PS4. By all other measures, the PSVR is very comparable to the Rift and Vive.

It's cool like playing sports with friends or taking a walk. But if you're not that type of person already, you're probably not going to put in the effort to do it virtually just because it's 5 feet away from you. It seems to be a case of, "Is really cool in short bursts, but unlikely to keep you engaged for long periods of time."

I'm not saying VR is difficult to stay engaged for long periods of time, as I've spent several hours in it, but the titles that encourage that type of gameplay are few and far between, mostly shoddily-made and one-time experiences. The experiences/games I try/play over and over again are less than 15 minutes.

It is very much a cool thing, but I am not built to virtually (but also physically) move around a playspace... VR excells in other areas like 3D movies/virtual desktops at least.

VR is fine. Due to the price and difficulty of setup it's still pretty niche but I cal tell you it's pretty big in Japan. Here they have VR theme parks and big events (like Nico Nico's Chokaigi) will have several VR attractions with 2hr long line-ups. The PSVR still sells out here as soon as they get stock in necessitating sales being done by lottery.

Personally I'm really looking forward to new headsets with inside-out tracking because fuck sensors.

>Anyone have a VR headset? What do you use it for?

I use it for home theater, porn, and games

Shooters are next level. If VR fails as a consumer product I could totally see VR becoming a niche competitive gaming tool for shooter players. Kinda like how using a controller for shooters compare to a mouse is shit, using a mouse compared to just physically aiming the gun in 3d space is a completely different level.

Get a gun stock and your flick times will be pro-level.

This. Even if VR fails in the west, japan has already made it an institution. VR arcades are huge and i love meeting the people who use them because the japanese are adorable.

>Personally I'm really looking forward to new headsets with inside-out tracking because fuck sensors.

When inside-out tracking becomes a thing, i want to start seeing VR mmos that actually take place outside. It would be insane to get everything working well, but imagine going outside, starting a program, and watching the entire landscape around you transform.

I would play a left 4 dead in that VR any day of the week.

>Where the fuck is our automatic Chaperone feature that The Gallery devs hinted at

Link to that? Chaperone was never supposed to be automatic, the whole point is to have a base area defined by a human to display, automating it would miss the entire point.

>Why did it take so long to get async reprojection. Why don't we have spacewarp yet

Please stop with the buzzwords, i could ask why all the other headsets don't have valve's shit but you don't see me doing that because i am not a FAGGOT.

>Why is the Steam UI in VR still so terrible even after a year later.

Because valve is shit at making UIs. 100% agree and i'm waiting for some decent UI mods.

It seemed like you wanted more complaints that only a Vive user could answer so there you go. It's entirely reasonable to be demanding more needed software features from a software company, doesn't matter what "should" be expected from Valve.

VR isn't going to catch on until they solve the inner ear/eye dissonance causing everyone to get nauseous problem. Until they solve that the only games they can make are these boring stationary tech demos, rail shooters or slow paced walking simulators no one gives a fuck about.

Since there probably isn't going to be some low cost, non-surgical method for fooling the inner ear and matching it up with what the eye is seeing any time soon I think it's doomed for the next few decades or so.

Not everyone gets the sickness, devs just think it's around 1/3rd of people and don't want to risk alienating them.
Of the 2/3rds that don't get the sickness, there's a "vocal minority" who complain whenever a game that could benefit from some good locomotion, and the rest are either desperate for any content and just deal with teleporting, or have never bought an HMD and don't plan to soon.

I have a PSVR.
I play Resident Evil 7 on it.
I tried the demo for Drive Club VR, which seemed kinda cool.

I'd like to play Onward, but that's PC only, and that would mean I'd need to drop money on a PC-compatible VR headset. Maybe when I'm done with PSVR, I could sell it and get an Oculus Rift.

It's mind boggling that there still aren't VR ports of games like Half Life 2 or Alien: Isolation. They did ports like that for Wii, Wii U, and Switch, but not much for VR.

Speaking of Wii, remember those early Wii promos with people waving the wiimote around and pretending to fire arrows or take cover behind stuff?
Games for Vive and Rift actually do that shit for real, with 1:1 tracking for your head and hands. It's just that the games aren't marketed well enough, and it's not as much of a cheaply-priced, dumbed down, all-in-one casual type product like Wii or Switch, so normies aren't snatching it up like they could be.

I think the short of it is that VR is still around but it's an old topic now. People have either tried it or settled with their opinion on what it's like. Important thing is the people who see the potential.

It's not good enough to be in every home yet but it's got enough of a following on multiple platforms and brands to survive until that time.

RE7 in VR is a really impressive experience, but it has some design issues.

I play standing up, and I physically turn my body to turn, instead of using the right stick.

But you'll get a bunch of scripted events where you suddenly won't be facing the correct way, b/c they programmed it with thinking that people would be sitting on a couch facing mainly one way the entire time.

The iffy solution is to hold down the options button to "reset" your view.
Most times when scripted event or cinematic starts, the screen will go black briefly. Hold down the options button, and it will "reset" your view and you'll be facing the correct way for the scripted event.

Also you can physically crouch and your view will match that in game, but it doesn't actually count as crouching. You have to click the right stick to "actually" crouch to get under certain obstacles.

Oh and if your PSVR smells like bad rubber/plastic, take the rubber eyepiece part off and wash it in cool water, and wipe down all the surfaces of the headset (except for the lenses) with a damp cloth.
That will help get rid of the new plastic smell.

>It's mind boggling that there still aren't VR ports of games like Half Life 2 or Alien: Isolation.

It's really sad what the companies did. Like, even if they're making something better that'll come down the line, at least let us fucking play something that's not very hard to keep up to date, since, oh look, you already implemented VR support once.

Seriously though fuck Valve. They hyped us all on HL2 and TF2 with VR and then they just stopped support. It didn't go on to become a really cool Vive launch title for fans. It didn't go on to become anything. They just left us for dead.

Statik is the coolest thing I've tried on PSVR so far. It's consistently clever, an actual game, but like everything else it's short.

Only other VR thing I've played lately is Summer Lesson, which just got localized, and it's pretty boring. Longer than anything else I've played though.

That looks kinda cool, but I meant those VR "injector" programs like Vorpx that just map the screen onto an artificial 3D half-sphere that fills your view, and the head-tracking of the headset controls your mouselook. But according to videos, it doesn't look like the view would do things like a real VR game would, like tilting the view when you lean your head to the side.

>>
>>375796045
It was easier in the DK2 days because you only needed to support headtracking and stereoscopic rendering. These days, motion control support is pretty much expected and that requires a lot of designing around.

Old games like Technolust and Dreadhalls got updated with Touch support. Most times it's just the same controls and the ability to pick up random crap to inspect but it helps.

It will pop up with a warning and force you to exit VR if it gets too hot, so no real concern over damage to your phone.
I have a Galaxy S7 and games tend make it overheat after about an hour, but it has no problem watching videos for as long as the battery lasts.

As for the battery life it probably drains something like 30-40% an hour, maybe half that with the charger plugged in.
It's not the most comfortable thing to wear so I've never actually used it long enough for the battery to die.
Longest I wore it was probably 2hrs watching Netflix, felt like >>375792804 when I took it off.

VR will not die out for good. Oculus, Vive and even PSVR (to a lesser extent) have proven we have the technology to make VR experiences that are far more palatable than the "VR" crazy of the mid 90s. The problem is now not the technology but the implementation into mediums. Porn---unsurprisingly---seems to be using the new technology the best at this time. Video games ran VR into the ground with copy-paste shooting galleries and walk-around-and-fuck-with-objects simulators with only a few notable exceptions. I think we are probably five to ten years until the VR implementation into mediums such as film and vidya are ironed out.

I feel bad for early adopters. I had a Rift DK 2 set that I sold off for a profit after the final models came out. It was neat to show friends and family but after you ride the Unreal rollercoaster and get spooked in Dreadhalls---the pickings were slim.

Phone VR is crap compared to PC for the reasons people already told you.

And like VR, don't knock motion controls until you actually try it. There's a vast difference between pressing a button for a pre-animated action and just doing it yourself with your own hands. Who cares how you look in your own home anyway?

Most VR devices are used for watching porn and videos. That phone VR is enough for that. In games with not a lot of cam movements like most VR games, that phone VR is enough.
>And like VR, don't knock motion controls until you actually try it. There's a vast difference between pressing a button for a pre-animated action and just doing it yourself with your own hands.
Yes I have. It's a meme feature. A motion control device that will be obsolete and changed in a few years. Yours will be a dust collector because you're stupid enough to be an early adapter on tech that is rapidly changing.

You can make it sound shit by wording it that way, but that is not what the subjective experience of it is like. You cannot tell you're looking at screens close to your eyes. You look "through" them. True and not true.

yes tracking isn't great, but you can use Riftcat which tricks the PC into thinking an oculus rift has been detected and thus you can use Cardboard as a slightly more limited rift (similar to a DK version of the rift headset)

Gear VR headset has fucktonnes more sensors inside, so honestly, Gear VR + Riftcat is easily the cheapest passable VR experience. But you will still need to sync up Move controllers or Wiimote+ or whatever. Also can be a pain in the ass to get working since Gear VR + Riftcat can only be done over Wifi, not cable like Cardboard so you basically need to set up a 5ghz router for it alone.

Star Trek Bridge Crew doesn require roomscale so it should be perfectly playable with Cardboard or Gear through Riftcat.
