'Memba when /v/ defended paid Steam mods just because it was Valve doing it?
I 'member
/v/ defended and derided it. There were many threads full of arguments over it. /v/ is not one person.

No bitch you're fucking wrong /v/ agrees on everything lmao fuck off
People have been paying for mods for a long time a la TF2 & CS:GO
>>375775831
No, you're wrong. /v/ doesn't agree on everything.
>call people pathetic beggars when they make petitions on the PC
>now suddenly it's okay to make petitions when you don't want paid mods anymore
Really cheeses my pizza.

You and I remember the past very differently, but then, /v/ has become a hive of revisionists and retards ever since GG brought in a bunch of newfags, and then their expulsion brought in another slough of them who pretended they've been here since 200x
>People who want to be paid for their mods get paid for it
>People who want to release free mods still get to release free mods
>This is bad
>>375775695
Literally nobody defended it except a handful of shills.
>>375776281
I'm okay with devs buying out a bunch of modders or offering them cash like counter-strike or team fortress, but paid mods resulted in a ton of faggotry. Heres a list of retarded shit that went down :
-Modders stealing code and assets from other mods and selling them (if they don't use cosmetic elements, GOOD FUCKING LUCK CATCHING THIS.
-Due to fear of mod theft, many modders removed their mods until they could either safeguard it against mod piracy or monetize their mods themselves, ruining many well liked mods.
-Overpricing of mods where simple weapon skins could cost several dollars EACH
-Big faggots gimping their free versions of mods to make paid mods more likely to be bought and taking down all prior versions of the mod. One faggot added fucking POPUP ADS EACH TIME YOU CASTED A SPELL FROM SAID MOD.
>tfw never got a chance to buy the horse vagina mod
Why live

anti-valve shitposters confirmed for fucking retarded and delusional.
>>375775695
Valve wants to bring the system back in some form. When they do, allow me to dust off my list of complaints.
1. 50% is way too much for Valve to take as a cut. 25% is too little for the mod maker.
2. How do you handle copyright infringing mods? What about free mods that are used in paid mods (That stupid fishing minigame is one such example)?
3. And what about when mods stop working? Suppose I pay $5 for a mod and the new patch breaks it?
4. What are you going to do about asset flipping? This ruined steam greenlight, what's to stop the flood of uncreative mods that are simply trying to flood the market in order to make money?
>>375776407
>One faggot added fucking POPUP ADS EACH TIME YOU CASTED A SPELL FROM SAID MOD.
How so? Please tell me you have evidence, this sounds hilarious
Guys, don't worry. Extra Credits is on the case!

You're ruining the content chain.
Let's take a porn mod for skyrim: Deviously Cursed Loot.
That mods needs 13 other mods to function. Those mods may or may not have further dependencies. If any of them decide to monetize, that goes up the chain to the one you want.
No one's going to buy a dozen mods to try your "kind of neat" one. So it's stillborn - may not even get made without a community to release it to that's willing to try it (because they can do so for free).
Instead, you get independent mods - read: asset swaps.

Why are they always so wrong?

>Valve and Bethesda get 75% of revenue for doing nothing
>Free mods get stolen and uploaded as paid
>Since mods can depend on other mods to function, a free mod getting updated can completely break other paid mods that never get fixed
>Alternatively, updates to paid mods can completely break free mods
>This is good
>>375776638
This guy
There is literally nothing wrong with a creator monetizing his work. The issue was that Bethesda and Valve were taking huge cuts, this was especially egregious for Valve to take massive cuts because the Steam workshop is absolute trash.
>>375775695
you mean the day /v/ literally stopped sucking gay-bens cock because he finally crossed a line that cant be uncrossed?
>>375775695
No I remember pretty much global disdain.
>>375776281
>people who just want to make good content end up being pushed to monetize their mods because there's literally no reason not to accept free money
>suddenly their intrinsic motivation has to compete with their motivation to make money
>they start caring less about making good content and more about making sellable content
It's a really common phenomena. People who receive monetary compensation for doing a task end up caring less about the task than people who do the same task for its own sake.

This will always be the fundamental problem. As long as mods require each other to work, any sort of pay per mod system will fuck it up. Something patreon, in theory, gets around this because you're not paying for the mod but funding development which doesn't have to be behind a paywall when a version is released. In practice, though, people often put things behind donation tiers which would cause the same problems.
I don't care how many hours a mod maker spent creating it, I deserve it for free regardless what the mod maker says.

As little as I care for mods I'm so glad for modders that they successfully nipped that shit in the bud. Money would have driven that scene right into the ground right to the earth's core.
I love how this shameless bait thread always pulls 500 replies because steam shitters just can't help themselves
You're responding to pasta bait, retards.
>>375775695
The way I remember the vast majority of /v/ shat their asses over paid mods while devil's advocates and reactionary contrarians defended it for (You)s.

To be fair, the biggest issue here is that mods went from free to not free. SkyUI, which had always been free, and which almost every single fucking mod out there had built dependencies for expecting it to always be accessible to everyone, is suddenly put behind a paywall. If SkyUI cost money from the start, modders could have avoided it, knowing that they would make their own mods less accessible by adding a paid dependency. Putting it behind a paywall only after the whole community has come to depend completely on it is downright exploitative.
I wonder how much backlash they could have avoided if they enforced a rule against monetizing previously free mods. You don't have to study consumer psychology to know that no one likes the value proposition of something they used to get for free suddenly starting to cost money. If they could have made a good case for the mods in the shop not being possible without money (like if they worked with modders to create some fresh high-quality workshop exclusives that would never have been made otherwise), people might have been more likely to accept it. They would actually have provided value to their customers. That's what it boils down to in the end: Paid mods didn't provide any additional value to justify the money demanded. Expecting money without creating value is what we call extractive business.

They might have better luck if they try again on TES IV launch instead of doing it retroactively for existing mods. But thanks to how fucking horribly they handled it last time, no matter how well they handle it next time, they'll stir up instant controversy just by mentioning the words 'paid mods'. Everyone irreversibly associates the concept with corporate greed now. That association will stick even if they manage to propose a more fair system.

What mods should be is essentially DLC made with fan-input or lead.
>>375781790
Of course it is. It's going to be a field day watching the spergs here go nuts over it.
ARK is doing a pretty interesting thing.
Modders can apply to the devs and show off their mod, if its one of the selected mods they get payed for it, each month they continue to update and work on it they get payed again.
