Why would you, as unlikeable as the main character is, it's still a pretty good game.
>>
>>375720402
Stick with Deus ex. Once u get to NYC it gets good, really good. Also play around with the environment and it mobility, it's half the fun
>>
>>375720402
Deus Ex just keeps getting better as it goes on, the first level is generally considered boring. It serves the purpose of clearly showcasing how you can choose multiple different approaches to solve the missions.
>>
>>375721317
It's a very good game with really bad writing. It's the exact opposite of Deus Ex and Bloodlines.
>>
>>375721659
For a video game the writing it's decent, definitely above average at the very least. If we've got a handful of well written games it doesn't mean everything below that is really bad.

The plot is horrible and the character writing is straight out of a Marvel movie. Pritchard's meta humor. Haas acting like Jensen's heartbroken ex-lover. Fucking 4chan memes in Hengsha. The way every single NPC talks and what they talk about. HR was written by people whose social lives are spent entirely on the internet and it shows so much it hurts.

I'm not saying they're funny, I'm saying they're way too insignificant to get pissy about and have no real influence on the game or the story.
>>
>>375725064
It's true that there is an internet discussion feel to the characters. My social life is spent 80%+ on the internet, so I really didn't see the problem. I assume it's true of a large part of the fanbase. The game was released in 2011 and occurs in 2027. Normies easily spend a third of their lives on the internet and it will likely go to 50% by 2027.

It works on most systems, but you can expect a lot of graphical glitches. I still can't get mirrors to work on my version.

I don't know if it'll be any better considering I have the Steam version, but try getting it from GOG. They usually spend the time and effort getting old games to work before selling them.
>>
>>375720792
New Vision is all you need

The gameplay holds up fine
>>
>>375725489
And I'm not saying they're significant. I'm saying they're terrible. Games with terrible writing are normal. Just don't compare HR to games that actually do have excellent writing and characters that feel natural.

>>375725514
I'm not talking about internet jargon, I'm talking about characters saying things and thinking along lines no one does, and the whole closed discussion group atmosphere generated by everyone in the world talking only about the topic of the day, which is either robot arms destroying the economy or the latest thing you did. The whole game reeks of lack of experience with real people in the real world, and it kills the immersion for me.

That's 95% of movies and most vidya too. Everyone talks about the key things for plot progression. It's true that in movies and non-RPG vidya, the limitation of time largely justify this (even though it sometimes take ridiculous forms like a character suddenly switching the TV on an interview about the plot). It's always been done, even in classical theater unity of action was rarely broken.
>>
>>375727036
Basically, all the level where those things that just have two arms and jump around are present. One by one they might not be as spooky, but those levels combined might be considered the third spooky one.
>>
>>375726870
No it's not, that's REvision, a new graphics mod that's literally fakefactory

>>
>>375727389
But everyone ONLY talking about that, like it's a topic near and dear to their hearts, and usually isn't something the characters would care or necessarily even know about? You're pointing out that it is a narrative tool. I know it's a narrative tool. I'm trying to explain that it is poorly implemented and comes off contrived as fuck. NPCs are there only to talk about you, the protagonist, or to try and persuade you, the player, that robot arms are a big deal. They don't seem real, they're just there for the game, like participants in a musical or something.

Get creative with it if you care for gameplay. Fun fact, Liberty Island has an all stealth no combat route that requires a bit of ingenuity.

Also give that kid a candy bar in the part afterward. Find the hidden path to make the hostages safe. etc. There's just so much cool and creative ways to get through situations.

Not to mention that the game's dripping with atmosphere though it may not be your thing if you can't into cyberpunk. I love cyberpunk, and I love the System Shock 2/Deus Ex/VTMB style of games, so it's practically an all time favorite of mine.

>>375720792
New Vision is what you need my friend. Once you have beaten the game I highly recommend The Nameless Mod; it's a completely different story from Deus Ex and not even set in the same universe the setting is like an internet Forum come to life.

>EYE: Divine Cybermancy

I keep seeing this being mentioned. How's the RPG part of it?
>>
>>375729945
Lots of options to get through obstacles (that is, until you get to Leopold/Sabbat HQ the rest of the game is meh.) Cool ending bit. Nifty espionage stuff in a realm of present day world vampires. Clever tid bits like the Malkavian sisters (I do love how the dialogue to save both at one point actually requires you to not pick the "neutral" option), Jack's whole master plan, the bonus Malkavian character stuff, Velvet's seduction and figuring out whether she's for real since she is Tory or she's seducing, etc. Characters aren't deep or anything, but they all have some sort of interesting shtick about them one way or another, and almost all of them are morally grey.

For me it's an 8/10 as well; the game's far from perfect, but it just exudes so much character and is very stylish which helps make it a memorable gaming experience.
>>
Deadly Premonition.

Not really an rpg, but it has character. At least for the 30% of people who play it. Also great if you liked Twin Peaks, doesn't mean you're gonna like DP, but will make you want to finish it more

Weird. There is an obtuse attribute and upgrade system for your dude, you get to grind to unlock new weapons, research and level up your skills, there is some minimal character interaction, but that's barely fleshed out.

The main point of EYE is the ridiculous combat and mindfuckery every player experiences trying to make sense of it.

I work as an editor. It's kind of my job to spot bad writing and point it out.
>Hell, many novels, even some classics do that.
That's a very poor excuse. Something being a novels is not a guarantee of quality and most classics were written in times before modern literary techniques, or even modes of thinking, were invented, and would not fare well under scrutiny if taken out of their context.

If a game from 17 years ago can pull something off but its alleged sequel made a decade later fails badly, then the creators of the sequel are at fault. They had the tools, the knowledge and an example to look up, and they botched it.
