The only time the combat was remotely fun was when it gets frantic, I.E. 5+ enemies shooting arrows and a mob chasing you, but the game can't handle that shit, and that scenario isn't even unique to BotW, and other games have core mechanics that aren't from 1998.

Because you're not considering the existing gameplay in BoTW. If you had argued instead "make down arrow a shortcut to your cooked material" as a faster way to gain health, I could understand how this works since it would essentially follow the same rules as weapons, arrows, shields, ect. Your idea doesn't improve any aspect of the existing gameplay and would make inventory management even worse since you now have to map your healing items to a button before and after combat.

The only thing this would fix is that people would stop bitching about weapon durability, because they'd be bitching about all of the garbage game mechanics you just added.

I think the best solution is
>only cooked food is edible
>finite amount of food slots
>animation when consuming food

This would require the menu system to be radically improved though.

For all of Skyward Sword's faults, it did have real-time potion drinking which was a huge upgrade from previous games. Feels like Zelda sequels are always one step forwards, one step backwards.
