Muhammad was a small fry compared to the vast majority of ancient conquerors. He only fought about three major battles, all of which took place in the Arabian peninsula and had a death toll of like 1,000 or so since they were less battles than tribal skirmishes, and in most cases it was his faction that was on the defensive, with many of his followers not being from the Arab warrior caste. Outside these battles, his followers did conduct raids on caravans after their supply lines were cut off by the Arab pagans, but in those "raid" often meant holding caravans at sword point demanding their shit and if they complied, you gave them some water and a camel to have a chance get back to a settlement (if you didn't without good reason it was considered dishonorable and could also risk abigger conflict)

He also did not conquer the East. The most he did was conquer the arab peninsula, but even then most of that area was taken without much of a fight because as soon as it became apparent that he had won, most Arabs thought it was within their best interest to convert to the religion that God had apparently favored with victory. If anyone is responsible for conquering the east, it's Omar ibn al-Khattab, the second Sunni caliph, since Muhammad died before the Arabs began to spread out, but considering that the Byzantine and Persian Empires had weakened themselves and that sectarian and political rivalries' within these territories were at a high, it's not much wonder how the Arabs were so easily able to conquer these regions, in many cases without much of a fight.
