Yes, its ideal moment to start, 0 is a prequel so you don't have to know anything about previous games and it's best in the series. If you like it in few months there will be remake of first part.

0 is a good starting point, play in release order when you start on the mainline games.
A remake of 1 is releasing august 29th, so you might want to wait for that, but the original still holds up fine. They just put out some reprints of 1 and 2 so if you have a working ps2 you can try to find a pair.

I beat Yakuza 1 a month ago via Emulation and it ran fine, but Yakuza 2 is much more glitchy in PCSX2. Any good settings that make it as close to the console version, but at a higher resolution? Almost everything I have tried gives it a smeared blurry or bloom look, and it is a lot more finicky then Yakuza 1 is with settings.

Just started it a month ago . . this game is huge and it is one of my fav games now, never played a game like it and I can not wait to play the others.

Yeah it's a fine place to start. Some people will insist you have to start with the first game and play through the series exactly the way they want you to or you're doing it wrong but they're just being autistic. If you enjoy the game you can go on and play the rest of the series. Then you can even go back and play Zero again and see what you missed.

Yakuza 3 isn't a good first game to start with. Like you said, you're at the orphanage for large bouts of time with barely any fighting in between even if you go searching out substories and it takes until chapter 5 before you actually go to Kamurocho. The Okinawa crew is alright but they really only grow on you on the second visit to the place.

Keep in mind you also jumped into the third installment of a series that kind of expects you to know things that happened previously and the summaries are only so-so at getting you caught up.

From what I understand it's the Majima Everywhere system. You're forced to do all of his encounters if you want to unlock the Y1 fighting style and it only can happen far later into the game. People were also complaining about enemies being damage sponges that can heal at will and everything knocking you down.

Playing Yakuza 1 for the first time right now on my PS2. Really enjoying it but boy is the combat clunky as hell. Constantly attacking away from enemies and missing heat move prompts beacuse im not in the exact right spot and fuck that shitty dodge attack training. There is and in 1 and 2 everything carries over to it. In the later games your entire Collections tab and substories are all reset so you can fight him without worry. Thankfully though, past 3 there's no missable substories and you can mess them up completely and still fight him. 2 is far harder to fight him though since he's based off of doing substories perfectly and you also have to collect a bunch of missable Heat Actions to complete four of the substories so you can fight him.

To put it simply, if you want to fight him you use a guide.

Also at this point Yakuza is pretty well the Japanese Assassin's Creed. Four whole fucking games were spent in the one fucking area with very minimal changes to the engine and tons of re-used assets.

Rather than being a problem of future characters for newcomers it's more a notion of the gameplay being pretty different if you want to go to any of the previous games since 0 is basically a culmination of them learning as they go along and adding what works and what they liked. 0 has all the style changes during battles with all the new combos and Heat Actions that come with that, the targeting at that point is properly refined, same deal with attacking backwards mid-combo, it has a controllable camera and seamless overworld which might be jarring for people when going to 1 or 2, you might be missing tons of Heat Actions that only got added in later games, things like boss battles and random encounters weren't seamless until like 4 or 5 (Mine in 3 as well), enemy encounters completely stop after maybe 20 or so encounters until the endgame compared to Kenzan onward where it's neverending without Lucky Beads, etc. That's not even mentioning people who have hangups about graphical quality.

It also has more or less all the minigames, so going to the older games and only having blackjack, poker, baccarat, and baseball as the main games with the ever changing slot machine gametype and Mahjong, Golf, and Shogi getting introduced in 2 they might even think it's barebones.

I'm not going to say it's a bad starting point or anything, it's just that it might make people assume the older games were exactly like it and have them go in with these crazy high expectations. We already had people for years saying 1 was hard to go back to after having started with something like 4 or 5. Kiwami fixes most of that, but 2 still was refining what 1 brought to the table.

Release order is usually the order game mechanics and graphics go in, so it's by far easier to start with the most primitive. Also, even if the continuity of a game starts in a prequel, every character and event is originally introduced in release order which diminishes their "later" appearance in a prequel where more details are revealed.

It's not like people can't enjoy all of them, but playing a series in release order makes you a lot more likely to finish them which can give you a much longer backlog of good games if you're into that.

Never forget who these people are. Even grand Kiryu. His role as a Dojima enforcer is one he took great pride in and enjoyed it's ocupational hazards.

Kiryu spends his time in the Yakuza beating on would be punks and tough guys. Notice how bored he is in his day to day life until someone wants to step the fuck up and then he is alive.

Fuck off. I dropped it there to play Yakuza 0 instead and was not dissapointed from start to fucking finish. Yakuza 0 is exactly what the series needed. No more old men shit, young guys in their prime in neon cities kicking pubks assess to the best music.
