In gaming terms, a gap of 2+ generations definitely helps too. The 7th gen was extraordinarily long, so in theory you could say 6th gen machines like PS2 are almost 4 gens old now.

Not really. It began in 05 (04, if you're counting the handhelds. That's 12 (13) years. In contrast, look at previous gens. The Atari 2600 was technically getting games in 1990 (debuted in 76). The Master System got games until 96 (debuted in 85). The PS2 got games until 2013 (debuted in 2000). The SNES lasted 9 years, the PS1 lasted 10 years, the NES lasted 10 years.

7th gen lasted about as long as most gens.

Hell, PS3 still gets games, but no one says we're living 7th gen still. It's arguable if the cookie-cutter EA sport titles and watered down ports even count as proper releases either.

In short, what I'd count as a console generation, and how most "professionals" seem to do it as well, is the cultural focus. Yeah, you could still play ye olde N64 and PS1 back when PS2 and GC had been out for years, but around 2003-4, no one really focused on 5th gen anymore, and everyone's sights were set on upcoming 6th.

I was talking about officially licensed releases, not homebrew/bootlegs. There's no officially licensed C64/NES games in fucking 2017.

The end of a generation is literally the arrival of the next generation. Simple as that.
We already got written history of our media, and they clearly show that most gens have indeed been mere ½ a decade, tops. Coincidentally, starting with NES in 1985, this has meant that we've seen the arrival of the next big thing during even numbers, with fairly small error margin.
