1. Ignore Sojiro early on. His confidant goes up very slowly at first and has a time-based roadblock anyway.
2. As soon as you hear about the fortune teller, go to her and rush to lv7 asap.
3. Avoid non-levelup events altogether and use that time for stat-ups instead.
4. However, it's good to accept sunday invitations because it gives points to the person inviting you and one other confidant you meet by chance.
5. Daytime events when people visit the cafe are good too because they give relationship points + a big stat boost. Tell them to fuck off in the evening though.

You were saying goodbye and it was all sad, but in the last animation your friends said, "We can go anywhere." implying that you weren't necessarily going home, but were just going to hang out with your friends somewhere.
