Punching demons to a bloody pulp was enough for most people to consider doomguy very strong against the forces of hell.

Doomguy doing over 9000 different epic fatality animations doesn't stimulate your imagination and brings nothing to the gameplay. Not only he punches those guys to death, he also needs to maul them and tear away their limbs for no reason when he could just go punch more demons instead. And kids love it.

That's a retcon introduced by The Ultimate Doom (released in 1995, after Doom 2). The dead rabbit shown at the end of Episode 3 was just something Adrian Carmack wanted to draw, it had no relation to Doomguy. He was just a good person doing the right thing, because nobody else was left to do it.
