Makoto is a Mary Sue. She doesn't have flaws. She has Hollywood flaws. She just got done reasoning out some impossible deduction out of thin air, then the game tries to subvert it by giving her a weakness and saying "Hey look, she's still human!" But she isn't. She's a dominatrix yamato nadeshiko with a moe side. She's not a character with flaws. She's Hermione.

Fantastic.

Has a mid-game slump, but picks up again near the ending. Fantastic soundtrack, several minor improvements to combat, bringing back negotiation was cool, and the whole package was just very polished and stylish.

I thought it was consistent for the most part. Kamoshida had the benefit of introducing the gameplay loop so that helps him out significantly, most of the following dungeons up till futaba's were carried by the main cast introductions.

Haru and Sae's dungeons were weak, and the one proceeding that didn't pick up until Akechi shows up.

So 3 dungeons ultimately for me were disappointments.

9/10 game. One of the few games that lived up to if not went up to par with the hype it made since the teaser stream 4 years ago.

Some gripes:

Akechi wasn't exactly built up enough as a character. If they wanted for the players to feel bad for him, then the game didn't exactly made that happen.

They should've added more incentive for a NG+ apart from the super boss. I'm personally a fan of making you play the game for a good ending/bad ending then see the true ending, if not a stinger for what's to come in a second playthrough. That way there's strong incentive to play another 100 or so hours.

I didn't like how they handled the final dungeon. The pacing's actually quite decent from Palace 1-7, but the final dungeon just felt rushed. The final boss could've been a bit more challenging as well.

Sae should've been a romantic option too.

Ive not finished it yet but so far i have major complaints that no really seems to mention often.

First Morgana literally makes sections of the game awful acting as a gate keeper as to when you can and cant do things. At least when the stamina system limited you it made sense, and you also had the choice to gamble with your health and ability to function the next day. Now a cat just acts like a parent and limits what you can do while holding your hand.

Castles and mementos are less interesting and far less varied than the tower in 3 so far with no change in sight. Change of heart sub missions seem like a after thought as well which makes mementos even worse.

Difficulty is scaled down from both 3 and 4, ive been bowling the game over.

Pacing has been altered, seemingly to make it so almost all of the days have some sort of cutscene or event that often eats up part of rhe day or further limits how and when you can do things.

Which is even more frustrating because they added so much to micro manage and do, so you never feel like you have enough time to do everything.

Far from the nest JRPG, I enjoyed Persona 3 and 4 more so far. 4 had its own major issues though.

No social link was outstanding but they all were consistently decent, with Sun, Emperor and Hanged man being the better of them.

The party members were good enough, rather innofensive I would say. You're not gonna really hate anyone (much), but there are some bland characters. This could have been better.
Overall the best Modern Purse Owner.

I think I might enjoy the VN portion of the game more than the JRPG portion, which isn't good because the VN part only serves to benefit the JPRG part and not the other way around.

There's a lot of X'ing through dialogue and the difficulty curve is front loaded.

It's very much a retread of the formula that P4 set up, but I give it a pass because P4 was nine years ago.

Even with everything I don't like about it, I still spent this whole month playing it.

it's probably the best kinda game persona can be if it wants to have SMT gameplay but with escapist SOL elements. the weakest parts of persona 5 is, as per usual, the actual gameplay is put on the backburner by design, and the actual idea of 'phantom thief' slowly loses the emphasis on the thief part. it's a game that strangely comes together; the sort of sudden intrusion of the law god and all of his dialogue was great, but the cast literally could not comprehend him. and the idea that the phantom thieves cease to exist if no one believes in them sort of seems like a half-baked thought in order to give us a cutscene in which the meter goes to 100% so like, the crew is renewed or some bullshit. but wasn't there some point half-way through the game that it was bad that they focused so much on how they were perceived publically?

honestly tho i much prefer a minimalistic story & emphasis on gameplay like in nocturne anyways.

5. it looks like a ps3 game and is one in 2017 on the ps4, still runs at 30fps on ps4 pro.
6. social links are not very interesting, even if the character designs are good. in part due to translation/english VA
7. main plot is largely arbitrary, the only one that matters is kamoshida as an introduction sae and shido, the rest are just excuses to gain a new party members and to make you popular as a minor plot device.
8. too much railroading and too many auto social links

Overall it's the weakest of the three neo-persona games.

This happened to me with pretty much every persona game, I've only beat 2 and 3 while every other one I've dropped at some point. The stories are self contained. As I said they have negligible influence on the overarching plot, it's just for the new team member to become a team member for the sake of it. You aren't trying to save people and stop the killer, you aren't working toward getting rid of shadows/stopping nix, you are just beating random bad guys because they are bad. Defiantly in my running for GoTY. I enjoyed the hell out of it and it felt like a improvement over P4: Golden in so many ways. I liked the S-Links having more going on then normal, and everyone having uses was a nice touch. Combat was way better, and I like them using actual Demons/Personas like P1 and P2 then the boring shadows from P3/P4.

I will say that I wish there was another month or two, and things did start to feel a bit rushed near the end of the final palace, but it still satisfied me. I also wish a few of the characters were either introduced better (Matoko) or earlier (Haru was brought in waaaay too late, and was the same criticism I had for Naoto in P4). I also wish there was a little less setup for the Palaces, and more opportunities to do stuff at night during less serious events.

I still like the story and ending of P3 better, but P5 is the best gameplay wise so far and was waaay superior to P4 in pretty much every way.

I think it's fantastic, but there are a few legitimate translation errors, or just generally stupid translations meant to westernize it that feel incredibly out of place in a Japanese set game. In particular, Ryuji has quite few attempts at American slang lines that read like the most out of touch, "I never talk to anyone but my cats" person in the world wrote them. In other cases his slang doesn't even sound like slang, just things the localizers mistook for actual slang in the style of, "highschool kids these days say stuff like this right?"

Other parts of the translation are just fine though, so, I'm a bit confused as to how these things actually happened. I know I made up joke reasons above, but I don't seriously believe that. Something went wrong though. It's not the end of the world of course, just a mar on the face of an incredibly good game with very few flaws. I'd be nit picking in most cases, there's only a few that seem to be sizeable, but, overall, it's just really a good experience.

I am not going to call it perfect but I would be lying if it isn't the closest Atlus has gotten to perfect the Persona formula. I have my nitpicks with the game especially for the last part of the game which to me it felt rushed. I am not going to jump to Atlus throat and be like ''hurrr durr unfinished garbage'' You can tell they tried their best and gave the best effort to work with what it was on their plate. The result to me is a new a gold standard in JPRGs. I just beat the first palace so this is more of a first impression. I've been wanting to try out Persona since 3 but haven't gotten around to it until now, and so far I'm completely disappointed. The writing is beyond generic, to the point where I'm physically cringing every few lines. Same goes for the characters themselves. The gameplay is boring and the whole execution thing just makes me feel like I'm playing a clunky pokemon ripoff instead of a full blown RPG. The "open" aspect is just kindof a spit in the face, as every other time I try to do something that fucking cat reveals to me that there's actually only one thing I can do at that moment, and that one thing will often take the entire day to do. I'd be more than willing to look past the gameplay if the story was good but it all just feels like it was written for people who are younger than the characters.

It's comfy as fuck and I like the art style. But that's a double edge sword as this is the only game I have actually fallen asleep to while playing, and I've done it 3 times in the past week.

I am probably one of the few who don't want this game get P4G treatment. That move just seemed like a cheap cash cow to me. I'd rather they make P5-2 or something that expand from the current plot. Futaba to me was one of the best things about the game in general.

I mean, her Palace was my favourite and the storyline surrounding it and her situation were easily the most emotional in the game. It was great to see the PT helping a desperate person with their powers rather than just targeting corrupt cunts.

The fact that she also essentially gets two Social Links as she is the major theme in Sojiro's one also adds to her characterisation.

And lets be honest she has the best motivation for going after Shido as he had her mother killed, stole her research and then had the blame put on her.
