Gameplay-wise, Axl doesn't really add anything truly worthwhile. He's a gimmick character at best.

Mind you, X and Zero are pretty well-balanced. Yeah but that's an RPG. It's easy to give everyone unique abilities.

The problem is that Mega Man X is fundamentally a side-scrolling platformer series. X has the market cornered on being the tanky ranged-specialist while Zero is the agile melee user. Axl doesn't have much going for him. Rapidfire isn't that great, his special weapons aren't that strong or unique enough and the ability to shoot in all eight directions is never necessary because all the stages have to be completable without being able to do so.

Well capsules can do a lot of unexpected things in this setting. They can build hardware upgrades on the fly, and the AI housed in them can have uncanny knowledge of current events at time.

I actually like to think the Light AI is actually housed somewhere within X itself, which is why it has any idea what's going on, and it just broadcasts to the capsules when X finds one so it can "manifest".

Wily created Zero to be the ultimate robot. Unfortunately, Wily tends to fuck up a lot, hence why all his robots are either idiots, weirdos or rebellious. So when he was programming Zero, he accidentally added an extra 0 somewhere and the end result was an unruly, crazy berserker who refused to listen to orders. Obviously, a weapon that refused to listen to orders is pointless so he sealed Zero away, hence why he was found in a capsule. Also, he made a magic virus based off of Evil Energy and sealed it in the same capsule.

What? No I like the design. I just thought it would be interesting since Omega is supposed to be using Zero's original body that when you fight Omega he would look less like a darker copy of Zero's current form and closer to how he looked in the X series. It would be cool and make the fight have more weight by fighting recognizable old zero.

I think the original X series design of Zero makes him look better as a leader and supporting character, but I prefer the MMZ design because it makes him look more like a protagonist.

In fact, in X5, it's shown that Wily's, no wait, sorry, "Isoc's" IDEAL Zero is the completely calm and taciturn one seen in the bad ending. The "true" Zero that Wily intended wasn't a berserker, but a cool-headed killing machine whose only purpose is to prove to the world that he is the most powerful robot in existence.
