I play Planetside 2 every so often, but honestly I can't give a good reason to play it over what everyone else plays instead; Battlefield.

There's too much down time and nothing interesting mechanic wise separating it from the giant that is the Battlefield franchise. There really isn't a big reason to bother with Planetside. Once we get a 2142 sequel then there will absolutely be no reason to ever bother with Planetside again.

Honestly they had something semi decent when they still had the old alert system to cap continents, it was actually a good enough reason to hop on every day and play for two or three hours to do an alert.

The new system is complete shit and makes literally everything you do feel awful, whereas the old system actually encouraged fun group play.

Every single thing about this game underwent some incomprehensible, retarded decision. Everyone's already covered how they shit on the core gameplay by making it a grindy wannabe Battlefield abortion, so I'm going to bitch about the art style.

They had a fucking PERFECT look for everything in the alpha. Bright recognizable faction colours, beautiful designs, many weapons and armour simply being PS1 designs on a new engine.
Then this literal fedora tipping nigger of an art lead decides everything needed an ugly redesign. Some of the worst offenders being TR helmets, Vanu getting every unique weapon skin turned into a generic purple box, and all classes having pieces of armour removed to be sold on the cash shop (heavies, for instance, need to buy their fucking pants on the cash shop and are only wearing a bulky mismatched chestplate with cargo pants).
This is to say nothing of all the horrible shit like the eye raping camos, construction helmets and dunce hats that got added later, while any decent military designs were rejected for not "fitting the theme of the game".

First off the map design was abysmal. Copy pasted modular base designs with literally no actual variety. On top of that the navigability of the bases themselves was totally nonsensical. It made the whole of the game kind of a slog. Something like an ongoing battle for a city in the center with actual building to building fighting would've been really fucking cool, but instead you just repeatedly capture one copy-paste monolithic structure after another. Then there are the infinite zergs and turtles that never go anywhere which is incredibly boring.

Then there was the actual capture mechanics which were, at least for me, incredibly annoying. Spending an extra three minutes to get the exp. bonus while doing nothing was fucking stupid. The resource system was kind of a necessary evil but I honestly think it could be reworked based on player performance instead of static sums at periodic intervals. The cap was also annoying, diminishing returns would've been a fine system.

The damage balance was completely retarded. Infantry shouldn't be virtually immune to AA cannons just because they're AA cannons with the exception of those with specific armor, and even then it should provide marginal defense against them. Same for light vehicles. Battlerifles are unnecessarily shitty, too. They force a low DPS threshold through artificially reducing firing rate while paralleling the damage from fully automatic rifles on a per-shot basis. This made them essentially pointless with few exceptions. But on top of all this all the guns felt awful, nothing seemed to interact with the character as it should, and nothing seemed to interact with the target like it should. The .50 should fuck shit up and yet it feels like you're shooting them with any other gun.

I'd actually given this game a try not even 2 years ago. I hopped in with all the starter stuff after the tutorial, and thought "Hey! This shits pretty cool." I figured out most of the class mechanics after playing them for 20 minutes each, which led me to believe that the Engineer class was the best all rounder and support. So, I devised a strat to farm CERTs like a money hungry jew. Grab a sunderer, deploy it close to the points in a big fight, and sit on the fucking thing repairing it. If you do it right, like 3 or 4 people will pick up on what you're doing and just hold m1 on the fucking thing. Not to mention when your sunderer ISN'T taking damage, you can just deploy your starter infantry turret and pester the defenders.

I saw later that they have an option to fucking CLOAK THEMSELVES. TO CLOAK. A SPAWNPOINT. I still haven't farmed enough CERTS for that.

Having played PS1 a lot back in its heyday, the original's TTK was not that long. In fact, it's faster in the original because of the way it worked.
PS1 had no headshots and damage loss over distance only took place at the extreme range just before the projectile disappeared (for example, the Suppressor SMG lost damage after 50m and disappeared after 75). As a result, the length of time for a shootout was very static and narrow. The only thing that really altered this was wearing different ExoSuits, and in that regard anything that wasn't a Reinforced Exo had you die VERY fast.*

In PS2, a point blank shootout is very fast thanks to higher damage, headshots, weapons with 600-1000 RPM rates (PS1 weapons all fired at much lower rates, 120-525RPM) and more weapons that can put out one shot kills.
But because of tighter hitboxes, smaller projectile collision models, much more mobile characters, way more recoil on weapons, and most weapons start losing damage after about 10m, anything beyond point blank ends up being a very long, drawn out fight.
A 50m shootout in PS2 with most infantry weapons will be much longer than a shootout in PS1 with any infantry weapons. Unless it's a sniper rifle headshot. Fuck one hit kill weapons.

Planetside 2's TTK is still among the slowest in active shooters today, nowhere near as lethally fast as COD's 0.2~ second TTK or Battlefield's 0.35~ TTK.

*In fact, it's likely that most players were so used to only ever having a Rexo equipped in PS1 whenever they moved in to fight indoors that they considered it the norm (just like how everyone who played COD4 used Stopping Power and were so used to it that they cried at Juggernaut undoing SP's massive advantage), when using a Light or Standard ExoSuit had you dying just as fast as non-Heavy Assaults in PS2.

Honestly, back when the game was thriving and actually had those massive servers filled with 1200+ people, it was one of the most enjoyable vidya experiences I'd had.

A lot of really great story moments came out of it, and I hope that, if not these developers then someone takes another crack at this kind of game.

The first thing they should do is get the technical accessibility down. So long PS2 went ignored by a bunch of people I knew because the game ran like ass. And it still does. Its minimum system requirements are way too high and performance is inconsistent as fuck across hardware (my mediocre PC that I haven't updated since 2012 runs PS2 quite well at medium settings, but guys with better rigs seem to have issues).

I would not care if the game looked like the original PS1 or some blobby Unity Engine shit like Unturned. If toasters could run it, it would automatically net a much larger user base.

There's nothing wrong with turning on Panther Within during combat.
Panther has its own enhanced attack when you melee out of it, and you can still maintain your combo with Dodge Offset even when you go Panther.

I've known a particular player studio artist for years before PS2 released, and said player studio artist was good enough, and knew T-Ray well enough that T-Ray gave him a job offer to work at at SOE, though he declined because he'd have to cross half an ocean and move to San Diego to get there.

Anyway, he's told me that T-Ray made an effort to resist adding shit like skull masks, but management forced his hand because they decided it sold better.

Some evidence of this is the quality of player studio submissions from when T-Ray arbitrated them, compared to Bill Yeatts who replaced him. T-Ray only allowed good quality player studio stuff through, and even most of those submissions he'd heavily critique and give suggestions on how to improve them before he'd approve anything. Just about every single helmet that T-Ray ever accepted went through at least 3 or 4 iterations before he was happy with it. Pic related, the sort of critique that T-Ray liked to give.

Bill Yeatts clearly never gave anywhere near as much of a fuck. Hell, I don't think he's ever even posted on the player studio forum, by comparison T-Ray had like 2k posts before he left.

Blame the retarded decision to make the game F2P for its aesthetic, it's not entirely the fault of the public-facing employees like T-Ray. There's only so much they can do.

That's kinda the problem, PS2 isn't a war.

There are no front lines, there are no supply lines, it's just one big rolling skirmish.

For as much as they hyped up the 3-way battles, they were an extreme rarity in the original Planetside. Here, it's a constant, and since there are only (now) 4 continents, there is no longer game than the current fight.

That was their big fuck-up. Dropping the Intercontinental lattice and HQ islands. (Well, that and F2P, meaning they couldn't -really- do shit about cheaters, and had to release constant new weapons and skins.)
But, by making everything an endless 3-way skirmish, they actually reduced the lifespan of the game.

That's before we even get into all the modern FPS bullshit they put into an MMO, because apparently Devs these days are just that stupid. (Single person MBTs, making the Liberator a gunship rather than a bomber, low fucking TTK...)
Shit that was just fucking retarded on release. (The Harasser. VS Mech-power.)

I really wanted it to be great too... but it was just a clusterfuck of shit.

As someone who was late to the game on PS1, but played a good amount of it anyways, I was jazzed as fuck for PS2. Let me outline some things for ya:

They found the warpgates and a bunch of alient technology, While studying them, some chucklefuck just walks right on in, gets killed and surprise he comes back. Then they get their top scientists to make people and items and shit to respawn.

It consumes nanite energy to do so when you're not in the warpgate which is why in the first game, ANTs drew Nanite Energy from gates and transported them to bases, but the second game sure as fuck doesn't have any such relevant energy mechanic.

Not even close. At launch, absolutely, but now, certs basically rain from the sky if you play frequently.

Kills are about 150~ exp with no subs or boosts, and 1-2 kills is about 1 cert. Weapons cost 1000 certs. On average, you should be doing about 100 certs every 2-2.5 hours, easily, if you're playing infantry in 24v24+ fights.

It does take work, but nowhere NEAR the amount of work it used to take.

On top of that, only absolute madmen buy guns with certs on any regular basis; because of the achievement/unlock system and for sheer familiarity, you should be killing the full 1160 required people with each gun before buying a new one, meaning you'd have roughly 1400-1500+ certs per weapon usage anyways from rewards/ribbons/medals/dailies/kills.

So stop bitching.

Without finality in battle there is no room for strategy. It is an infinite attrition of who will get burned out faster. It's like if you played Smash Bros with unlimited stock. What is the point?

That core principle is the heart of the issue. The lame art direction, poor sound design, boring weapons, poor animations, poor performance and lack of variety, the whole thing is pointless.
