Is Touhou a good game for shmup beginners?

Yes. It's a very simple shmup without any complicated mechanics, has deathbombs, and easy modo on most of the games can be beaten fairly quickly.

However, it also has a high skill ceiling, and some of the upper tier games on lunatic can be comparable to some of the more difficult shmups, so you'll find yourself continuing to find enjoyment out of it no matter how good you get at shmups.

IN's deathbomb mechanic also fucks with your deathbombing sense in general if you're new to the games by the way.

I do agree that picking EoSD Normal is the fastest way to improve at the game. But for me, and others, getting that first 1cc really motivates others to continue on with the series a lot, so I'd say it's worth it just to meme through IN easy and clear that.

I've played touhou for more than 2 years by now, 1cc'd most games on hard and a few on lunatic, and I'd say if I hadn't gotten that first 1cc as quick as I did I may have gotten discouraged and just played something with a smaller time investment.

You just gotta have the right mindset for this sort of game, to know that you're gonna die a lot but once you beat it, it will be most satisfying thing imaginable.
The only challenging games I ever played was the Souls series, and as much as I hate to admit it, they gave the aformentioned mindset to succeed, so I was kind of prepared for repeated failures, minor improvements and such.

But I have to admit that I had to look up how to pass certain parts of EoSD, mainly the parts with the fairies in stage 5 where you have to stay still, so it wasn't all pure trial and error. It was such a simple thing to do, yet it didn't cross my mind to do it until I watched a walkthrough and tried it myself, but it certainly helped with my enjoyment of the game.

Easy mode is good for getting used to the controls I guess. Moving around, changing between regular and focused speeds on the fly, fitting between bullets, I dunno. You probably still shouldn't play it for more than an hour though.

I recommend EoSD for a starter game. A lot of the spell cards involve random dodging rather than learning patterns, so while it'll be rough at first, it should improve dodging skills well. Deathbomb timing is also the harshest in the series I think (besides Ten Desires which just doesn't have them, if memory serves), so being able to deathbomb in EoSD is a good skill to develop.

I have finished LoLK Pointdevice and have a 1cc in Legacy on Normal, yet I would recommend to anyone on Normal level to play this game on Easy for just to keep their sanity.
This game Easy mode is the equivilant of Normal from the older games.

I only did it on Normal because I was stubborn as fuck and I don't regret it, but I felt empty for some reason after I beat it in both modes.

You don't unlock extra but you DO see the endings. Clearing Normal is for super nerds only.

Play Ikusaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan. It's very good. The devs did incredible work incorporating music, visuals and gameplay to create a REALLY good "game feel".

Don't worry, you are not crazy, most people think TD has the smaller window. The thing is that the way the danmaku is made in that game leads you to believe this, with bullets that spawn on top of you and shit.

Not necessarily, from experience I can tell you it's more of an autism spectrum.
/v/ and /jp/ are the most accepting of Touhou and bullet hell games in general.
/shmupg/ on /vg/ is accepting of bullet hell games as well, but there's usually one or two autists who get upset over them from time to time.
/vr/ is fairly negative towards bullet hells because >muh r-type and garegga
shmups.system11 is a mixed bag that ranges from a bunch of very good Touhou players to dadcore assholes who lose their mind upon spotting an anime avatar.

The last stage in general is a bit of a difficulty spike, especially if you were only playing on level 1 the whole time. Also, Death Mode is a major difficulty spike as well if you choose to play it. Playing purely for survival and avoiding Death Mode though, it's a relatively easy 1cc.

Hardest non-shmups I played were souls, castlevania 3, and some fire emblem/shin megami tensei on the higher difficulties.

But as far as single-player games go, nothing even comes close to the difficulty of shmups.

More than just dying a lot, it FEELS overwhelming and impossible. The intimidation alone is enough to scare people off
