You don't want to use anything but the OpenGL renderer unless you are on Ayymd
Using speedhacks is a bad idea and there is literally no reason to touch the d3d9 renderer.

Is using a PSP to emulate a PS1 as tedious as it sounds?

It all sounded so great until I remembered it only has 2 triggers, meaning you've got to map the other two to the analogue stick.
