It's a turn based RPG. One of the hooks is that the overworld was visible encounters and the actual battle maps require characters to move within range to make attacks. Range depends on the weapons used (guns for example are obviously easier to use at range) but weapons can have subtypes like certain swords that favor horizontal range over a standard vertical. The combat features a combo system similar to Legend of Legaia, the story is usually something gay and the interactions between characters is something to be enjoyed.

Is my take of the series. I platinumed the first one on PS3, I sometimes have a good sit down and regret this.

>either on the overworld or in a dungeon, you explore, grab items, and fight monsters
>fighting phase
>turn-based RPG where you move your characters around and use varied attack, with a combo system to alternate between heavy attacks, rush attacks, normal attacks
>can also use skills (basically magic) or EXE attacks (basically rage mode)

But since the dungeons are straightforward and since the overworld is linear as hell, we barely talk about these.
