This is why your game isn't on on Sunday. It's basically a solved game at this point. Forget about age, forget about muh displays, forget about your obnoxious fucking fanbase for five seconds and think about how utterly stale Melee is. You can claim the game is growing all you want, but there is zero variation in the part of the community that actually plays the game. There are a handful of good players left while the scrubs fight for scraps at the bottom of the battle. There is no Spark who played a mid-to-low character in Continuum Shift and pulls the tournament out from underneath everyone's nose. There is no Gamerbee from Thailand playing a character nobody gave a shit about and slaying veterans left and right. There is no Noah, a literal child that was able to win games by abusing the shit out of super armor.

Melee has no progression. Top 4 is all but guaranteed and the only reason it wouldn't be is if you put all four on the same side of the bracket for some reason. We can only the same four people fight so many times before it gets stale. You have more people watching and sitting in the crowd booing games that aren't yours, but nobody's actually playing at a level that's acceptable for competition. Melee is past that point. The complexity of the game has caught up to it, you can't possibly match a decade of experience and muscle memory, it's just never going to happen. So nobody new is playing the game, and the gap between the top 10 players and everyone else is huge, and there's no online scene to speak of. There are more new people SHITPOSTING ABOUT MELEE than actually putting time into the game.

As a business decision this is smart of Mr. Wizard. Melee is the second highest viewed event at EVO by a long, long ways and this means that instead of one viewership spike from Melee up to Street Fighter on Sunday Mr. Wizard now has a viewership spike with Melee top 8 on Saturday and then another viewership spike on Sunday for Street Fighter which means he basically gets to go to advertisers and sponsors and sell Saturday advertisement blocks at a better prices because of higher Saturday viewership heights.

Meleefags are the absolute worst. You don't even want to play your game, you just want to watch your favorite players who you've given a cult of personality.

This is really where all this impotent rage from the FGC is coming from. SFV is a huge disappointment and that's their one game series they always fall back on, nobody wants to play anime fighters, NRS games aren't even given a shot, and MvC is ded game.

The FGC doesn't have a "golden standard" game that's been handed to them on a silver platter this year that they can default to, so instead of focusing frustration at their own community being split and developers giving them nothing to work with, they decide to go full-on with smash shitposting.

I play melee competetively myself and I can say this is 100% correct.
Melee is actually shit in those regards.
But you see, it's just more FUN than any other fighting game. I started with sm4sh competetively, but it got boring pretty fast. Then tried melee, and it just feels awesome.
Well, maybe it's just because I play Luigi and actually don't intend to win anything at tournaments. I just have fun fucking players in mid level up with surprising them with Luigi.

I play this game for 3 years now, and I still have fun playing it. Probably the most fun I ever had with one single videogame.

Melee is kind of a weird esport. Hear me out guys. Other games that are esports are huge and have a lot of players all competing to try and be the best. Its possible to get good enough at street fighter v or overwatch or whatever other shit there is through practice, and then be able to hang with the best.

Melee's "best" has been the same for ten years and there are only a handful of new players in recent times that can even take stocks off the best. Its NOT feasable for most people to get good enough at melee to hang with the best. So while melee is the most watched game or whatever, 99% of the watchers either don't even play, or are scrubs.

Compare that to Street fighter V, whatever you think about the game, 99% of watchers play the game. Maybe 20% of those watchers can survive a tournament for a bit.

There's no future in melee for the players, only the viewers. The top players will keep sharing the prize money and sponserships, and the viewers will watch more melee. Its kind of like real sports in that way, with the privilege of playing professionally being locked for most people.

i never understood how people can down play or hype tournaments based on who wins whos if someone wins but its done is a crapy wayt nobody like? for atleast its about how play win what happens during a match. watching smash 4 over melee solely because the same people keep winning while the footage is still way more interesting than smash 4 matches is stupid.
