Every job on SS13 you can learn in only 2-10 minutes and another 10 minutes to not be shit at it. Granted, I had the advantage of learning it due to me being used to BYOND's outdated bullcrap they call a gaming engine I still say it isn't difficult at all to learn quickly.

Dwarf Fortress takes literal hours to learn how to get a good placement on how to run things properly. It doesn't help that it's UI is hipster-tier.

Simulated =/= Random generation

The only things randomly generated are names of people, places and things.

Things like items, buildings, civilzations, people ect are simulated. The simulated grow, react and change depending on their enviroment, what has happened there, and what is still left.

Someone put it best, the roads arent just generated between kingdoms like minecraft generates mines or something, they are built by someone because those two kingdoms valued traveling between them.

Module design is the hardest part.
You can put together perfectly functional ships using only the stock engines and reactors. The in-game documentation is pretty helpful and the editor will tell you if something in your design doesn't work.

Its a regular rite of passage for new players in their first round to either:

The game is able to be what it is, because essentially it's shitty sprites and code written by monkeys.
The moment you make it 3D you remove big part of the coders who actually are to thank by keeping the game alive with updates and bug fixes.
Items need 3d models,things need animation, CPU and RAM suddenly become an issue for a game that can run on a potato.
How do you put the amount of detail in 3D that you can have in 2D+text?

You don't *have to* interact with anything in DF. Surviving is easy once you get the basics down.

Doing anything cool (i.e., playing the game) is an exploration of the complexity. Experimenting with training regiments, military uniforms, capturing and utilizing giant cave spiders, and any kind of engineering project entail complexity.

I mean, I remember reading detailed logs on the Bay12 forums of a guy who started a mermaid bone farm.

My favorite fort I ever made. It was a pyramid carved from a volcano in the middle of a cold desert. Later, a solid green glass bridge was the only entrance.

All the founders, elected officials, and nobility received special nicknames. Usually it was their favorite animal.

The fort fell apart when cavern beasts ran amok, and a lot of dwarves thought dodging into lava was a good idea. Then a collapse while building lava slides on the outside killed two miners, one of whom was a founder. His wife complained to the mayor for days. The mayor, nicknamed the Rat, threw a tantrum and beat her to death.

At that point I just cracked open the circus to have a proper end.

Every material has specified melting, burning and boiling points, so so when the fat tissue reaches it's melting point it melts. The lose of a body part causes bleeding, causing death.

A result of this is that if you melt a dwarf's fat in controlled manner, it can survive, and since it has no fat, it can survive much higher temperatures.

Yeah, I love DF, but it's complexity and difficulty are always exaggerated. There are too many parts of it that are too barebones as of now, like agriculture.

It's worth noting that for the last few releases all the effort has gone into adventure, which never gets too much hype, and world creation. Next one will add a slew of new potential conflicts and quests regarding artifacts, undercover agents and fake identities.

The actual gameplay ends up being simple, but in the rare event that two players fight with or alongside each other they're often using playstyles that the other didn't realise was possible.

Last PvP fight I was in, I didn't realise it was possible for an A5F (not the cool artillery one, the bad one) to be even remotely dangerous.
And the other person didn't realise it was possible to have so many shield and heal beacons up that I was invincible to their attacks as long as I wasn't travelling ahead of the beacons of me and my clones.
