Genuine masterpiece of the collectathon platformer genre. A lot of people did in fact play it; they knew Spongebob was the top dog in cartoons, so they invested heavily into the game, knowing many people would buy it and likely buy future games based on the high level of quality here, and that they could reuse the library of assets in future Spongebob games. Spongebob Movie Game used many many assets from this game and was great, though not as good and somewhat rushed to meet the movie release. To be honest, I have always hated this whole "licensed games are terrible" stigma. There's a lot of crap licensed games out there (Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde is one), but you'd be surprised at how many good licensed games there are

exactly this. SM64 had the repetitive courses because of memory limitations. No one actually wanted those for sunshine, where you end up doing 70% of the same level repeatedly, and like half the stars dont even involve any platforming mechanics. There are parts that do the platforming right even with fludd (that dock level comes to mind) but the actual gameplay pales in comparison to galaxy

the setting and environment are 10/10 though

People dont understand that "linear" is way too vague a descriptor on its own. I assume he meant that the world design is not linear, as you feel a real sense of exploration. I don't really think it's less so than like, MMs overworld, it's just that the way it is spread out makes it seem so. Zelda always delivers on having worlds with a lot of exploratory opportunities, though it relies on road blocks or "key" items a bit too heavily (see rock next to starting area, progress linearly until you get bombs, remember area and return to it, use the bombs which are essentially a key, etc.)

I can see why you might not like PSO Ep1&2, especially if you didn't play it back when it first came out. It was probably the first MMO where attacks were not just pure hitscans, and so moving around and attacking from behind really mattered a lot. It was surprisingly fun to actually be able to run around behind an enemy and smack them in the back enough that they couldn't fight back, unlike nearly any other similar game at the time.

Plus, I still love the themes of PSO and the other Phantasy Star online series.
