>phone gaming brought in only $1.8 billion less than PC and console gaming combined in 2016
>Sony is giving up on the handheld market
>Nintendo is trying to sell a console/handheld hybrid to keep the handheld market on life support
Is this the end /v/? Is the future of gaming just going to be phones and tablets?
>>
>>364769323

That's why they don't make vinyls anymore either.
>>
No. If all else fails we will always have indie PC games to fall back on.
>>
Our wives' sons will probably only play tablet mobas and tank games.
>>
>>364769323
microtransactions in free mobile games with non-existent development are more profitable
>>
Only reason mobile games are raking in cash is because of the microtransaction business model. It's so easy to spend money without realizing it, because it's just 99 cents at a time. There's a few huge companies that just shit out these cash grabs, and people get them to have some casual fun on their phones when they aren't busy.

It's not really an indication of the quality of the product, just the intelligence of the business model and marketing. Mobile gaming is getting so big that there are actual TV ads for free-to-play games. I don't think it'll ever actually replace mainstream gaming though, as it's a different market.
>>
>>364769860
What is more mainstream: Skyrim or Clash of Clans?
>>
>>364769950
In my social circle it'd be Skyrim, and I think overall it's a more well known title. This is just personal experience talking though.

People don't look at mobile games like Clash of Clans the same way they look at "real" games like Skyrim. One is a game that you have to devote time to sitting down and playing, the other is something you do on your phone while you're waiting for the bus.

I do think in the future as handheld technology improves, there'll be less distinction between "real" games and casual games, because phones and tablets and such will be able to do both. It won't be the end of gaming on PC or consoles though, just more options.

/v/ is too quick to jump in and lament the end of gaming, as opposed to looking at it as a new era with more options and opportunities.
>>
>make lots of great new content
>it costs money to make
>might not sell

or

>spend a couple million on a mobile skinner box
>put in health/fuel/whatever mechanics so that people either have to watch ads to keep playing free, buy more time, or wait for the slow as fuck regen
>>
>>364769323
>only $1.8 billion less
>$1.8 billion
>only
you people are retarded.
>>
>>364770809

When you're doing 40 billion a year in business, a difference of 1.8 billion between competing markets is a dead heat, anon.
>>
>>364770332
>I do think in the future as handheld technology improves, there'll be less distinction between "real" games and casual games, because phones and tablets and such will be able to do both.
The problem is that smartphones suffer from poor curation for games, and that's really the only area that the 3DS and Vita beat smartphones in. Smartphones were shiting on the 3DS and and matched the Vita spec wise at the time of release. If curation wasn't a problem for smartphones then we would have seen controller attachments for smartphones and smartphones with built in controllers take off in popularity and the heldheld market would already be dead. Instead we're seeing the handheld market slowly die and it's unlikely those games will be moved to smartphones without changes considering the developers would get much less visibility and people have to swim through an ocean of shit to find the good games.

>>364770809
We're talking $40.6 billion vs $42.4 billion, that's not much of a difference at all.
>>
>>364769323
This garbage chart doesn't count retail you retard.
>>
Mobile gaming is profitable because there is a big playerbase that didn't exist ten years ago. The people who buy normal games are as many as ever. Mobile gaming and regular gaming are growing further apart every year, it's eventually going to be two different markets alltogether.
>>
>>364769860
It's like Pachinko and Casino machines really except now it's all on mobile where you bet money or pay to win.
>>
>>364771386
Curation is a good point, and this might fall under that, but another problem is that there are only a few makers of handheld gaming devices, so more people can have access to the exclusives on them, as opposed to phones where there's hundreds of different models and manufacturers.

Another point to be made is that phones are more general purpose than dedicated gaming devices like the ones you mentioned.
>>
>>364769323

>consoles being literally btfo my PC and Mobile

KEK
>>
>>364771781
>The people who buy normal games are as many as ever.
I think there is a significant population of people who used to play "normal games" in the past because it was their only real option, but have now moved onto mobile since it's basically what they really wanted in the first place. As a result, I don't think the "real gamer" market is going to be as big as it used to be in it's peak. On top of that, companies have a choice now they never had before, which is either investing in expensive, complicated games that have a good chance of bombing, or investing in cheap, shallow games that have a really good chance of bombing but who cares it was cheap!
>>

>>
>>364772375
>Includes Social, PC free-to-play, PC subscription and Premium PC games
So really, about $30B is coming from Facebook and Korean MMOs.
>>
For casuals, maybe. The easy pick-up-and-play aspects of consoles, as well as the social aspects are heavily outstripped by mobile gaming.

PC gaming will endure as it always has.
>>
>>364769323
vita is pretty popular in Japan, man
>>
>>364772375
Most of the money being made on PC is the same type of F2P/P2W shit seen on mobile.

Stop cheering the success of diseased business practices.
>>
>>364772060
>as opposed to phones where there's hundreds of different models and manufacturers.
But they only run one of two different OSes and the games are OS dependent like PC instead of device dependent like consoles.

>Another point to be made is that phones are more general purpose than dedicated gaming devices like the ones you mentioned.
Like PCs. However, unlike PC games all phone games are designed to work with integrated GPUs (which happen to be the same as what handhelds have) instead of separate higher end GPUs only present in PCs built for gaming.

That's because in trying to net the hardcore fans, they managed to lose both audiences. Clearly COD has the best business model, considering IW was the best selling NA game of 2016.

No. Most phone games are built so that you can play them on the go (bus ride, waiting in the Dr.s office, etc). The games that make the real money are the ones that employ F2P. Games that are deeper than that don't have the same audience. Such an environment is pretty casual.
