Far as my understanding, it is possible in the newer firmwares to downgrade in a multiple of different ways, but you still need a way to actually access the kernel or some shit. And thats with the DSi ware games, without physically cracking it.

In its current state DS games from SD card has a lot of compatibility issues and long ass loading times. You can't save to SD card either, you have to save to Slot-1 card with the matching save type.

Once fasthax gets a stable release, combined with soundhax and safehax you can downgrade directly from 11.2 to 2.1, install a9lh, and restore your 11.2 backup.

No more 9.2 downgrades! The entire point was that 9.2 had an arm9 exploit, but now 11.2 has one!

Well yeah there are ways to boot into Gateway mode once you set up a9lh+luma3DS. This has been possible for a long time already.
Basically Luma3DS has payload chaining, you can tell it to load a different a9lh payload on boot, such as a Gateway payload.
The only reason to bother doing this honestly is to retrieve save games from Gateway card roms, so you can backup/transfer them to SD/CIA installed games.

NEVER follow Gateway's a9lh setup guide, it's the worst.
