Looks like Bioware have been spending too much time looking at roided up Krav Maga "instructors".
That kind of disarm is how you get shot, but it looks cool and flashy to people who don't know hand-to-hand techniques.

Real pistol disarms ALWAYS involve stepping off the axis of fire, controlling the weapon and pushing it further away, and attacking & disarming your opponent.
Because if the gun goes off or you fail to disarm him properly, the axis of fire is pointed away from you the whole time. Still super fucking dangerous though.
