Some perks are downright broken when stacked with artifacts like backstab x15 with assassins guild gloves. But yeah, the only perks worth it are damage increase modifiers and stun inducers. Wasting perks on armors and most of the thief/mage skill trees is a waste and anything above dwemer smithing is retarded. Enchanting is so broken that it makes most perks irrelevant even without exploiting alchemy.

These games are RPGs. And the moment you slap an identity on the player, the moment you shatter that role-play aspect.

Skyrim made you be the fucking Dragonborn, whether you fucking wanted it or not. You are the snowflake. I feel like the game even tried to downplay this often since none of the factions even mention this.
And Fallout 4 was the worst of these, where moment one, your character has a voice, a spouse and a fucking child, throwing out any sense of identity the player hoped to have. And then within the first 10 minutes of the game, your kid is taken away and your spouse is shot. Goodbye wanting to care about either of these characters at all.

Honestly, they should have implemented an ability to do speech checks on everyone.

Rather than walking up to EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PERSON IN THE WORLD AND IT TRYING TO KILL YOU. Why not have the ability to approach them, and attempt diplomacy. If it fails, then they can try to kill you or whatever, but if it passes, then they might let you pass.

That's one thing I hate about Bethesda games. Everything is hostile in the world. No chance to actually try and be charismatic and talk your way out of situations that aren't already scripted.

I remember in Oblivion that I had gotten turned into a Vampire for the first time ever. And it was nearly impossible to get un-vampired because of everyone being hostile to vampires.

But in an odd it not only made sense that they would just be instant-hostile to any creature of the night, but it also made me use my stealth abillities and work hard to be cured for it. I was actually really good fun. How much did I want to be cured and how far was I willing to go to do it?

I remember sneaking into the Skingrad castle at night, trying to pickpocket keys off guards and and prowling the halls trying to talk to the Count. Shit was tense but fun as hell.

Moments like that just kinda meld together, but in the recent games, they just don't fucking work that way.

In order to become an alchemy master in oblivion and morrowind, you had to:
1) Gather tons of random shit (mostly restore fatigue ones)
2) Mix everything without caring about the effects
3) That's it
You also couldn't follow recipes in Oblivion, because mixing ingredients that you didn't know shared properties was forbidden

In Skyrim, you actually have to study each and every ingredient to know all of their effects. Mixing 1000 fishes with 1000 dartwings wasn't going to teach you shit about chaurus eggs (unless you picked the rather useless perks). Sure the effects were less fun, but at least it wasn't mindless grinding

Unless you're a mercenary, you're not going to be making money. And even then, you get...what? 500 for risking your life for a month or so?

The NPCs don't have the advantage of being Dragonborn. They don't have the advantage of teleportation (fast travel), or being God incarnate. And if they die, they die. So even a mercenary is going to stop after a while. The ones you find in caves usually have decent cash on them, all things considered.

It's not "realistic", but it makes some sense, at least.

Yes, but if you (the player) were moving you (the character), it would be more exhausting.

Imagine you're an NPC. You actually have to walk these distances. You need sleep. You need food and mead. You can't just run around Skyrim for months on end, never taking any break and surviving on health potions and Dragon souls.

And even from a gameplay point of view, fast travel helps you. You (the player) don't have to spend half an hour trekking across bandit infested roads to reach your destination. You just hit "yes" and there you are. Sure it takes in-game time, but it takes less than walking it on your own, and less energy (for you and your character).
