40000 men are heading for Torii Mototada's castle, defended by 1800 men.
Ieyasu is like "yeah, whatever we're going somewhere else"
William decides fuck that, I'm gonna go help the old dude

so does the manga follow the story of the main game or is it some sort of a prequel?

It almost certainly follows the game very closely.
The manga has a ton of lines that are identical to what we've seen in the trailers and the manga started in like June.
It's clearly written by someone who has access to the full game script.
