Depends on tech group and the country you plays as. With Prussia you can get absurd levels of infantry combat ability and discipline (this was mid game, i was in thew mid 13s by the end) so i just kinda ignored cav for the most part.

Yeah son. Ironman too. I had a good start and destroyed the Ottomans 'cause I exploited the vassal mechanic of auto-pulling you into defensive wars.

You could still do this in the latest version too (this was from before Mare Nostrum).

Start went like this - declare war on Albania while increasing and allying Austria or another huge, nearby nation. Keep them occupied but don't end the war until the Ottomans declare. Instant vassalize albania and call in your big bad friends to destroy Ottomans.

Rest of the game is EZ mode.

You can force a country into vassalization if you win the war against them.

The idea is to maintain a war that you have 100% warscore on and wait for the ottomans to try to fuck with them (because they see OH HEY TIME FOR OPPORTUNISTIC WAR THEY'RE FUCKED) and that's when you make your demand to have them be your vassal (Which auto-succeeds because 100% warscore) and you inherit the defensive war.

in my experience vassals are shit since they take ages and so many dip points to integrate and they also keep a diplomat fully occupied in that process. And if you don't integrate them they'll take up too many of your diplo-relation slots too fast.

yeah France was kicking the shit out of them. Then I suddenly got a union with an instantly angry France which was why I took those screenshots in the first place.

this was all done within the first two years of the game and no one ever allies Albania before they get eaten by Venice or the Ottomans so its a really easy strat to pull off. Super gamey of course if you dont like that

you should usually have about one quarter- to one half of your combat width of cavalry. They will fight at the flanks so you don't want them out front when your infantry dies.
I usually do 2:1 infantry:cav in the early game then 3:1:3 later when my siege techs up

That's generally the case. Vassalization is good for HRE games for capturing electors and reducing AE impact. It's also good if really need your admin points (like playing the Timurids, since it's in your best interest to get reforms in as fast as possible, which requires completing one of several admin-based idea groups. Granted, in that case you're probably going to be just taking territory since warring fuckers multiple times is your best bet for those horde unity boosts)

Yeah I could see it being an option early game. I usually just put my focus in admin points nad hope for a good admin king and then go from there. Too much of an annoyance to have them there in the background. That being said I did make a march out of the templar knights once and they did wonders as the AI retardedly tried to invade their castle and failed on Malta or whatever island they had (Rhodos?)
