Giant Robots are by their very nature, a bad concept. It's taking the ineffective and absurd and glorifying it for no good reason. There is no situation in which an oversized mechanical man is more effective than a flying/dynamic wheeled mobile tank/artillery.

There is literally no reason whatsoever to produce large scale mecha, ever. You want mecha without them being shit, they damn well better be exo-suits. That's the only "mecha" worth a shit because it's the only one that makes any sense. Enhancing soldiers IS something you do. Building poorly constructed humanoid vehicles with poorly designed Japanese energy swords is bad and you should feel bad for thinking it's good.
>>
>>343954020
Nukes are boring. Nobody wants to use them.
For example, it's like if someone gave you a choice between a mech or a tank.
Nobody wants to use a tank.

>Giant Robots are by their very nature, a bad concept.
In real life, sure. But this is /v/, not /irl/.

From a video game perspective, mechs offer a sensical solution to gameplay depth problems. Mechs can sensibly equip several weapons simultaneously, mechs can customize parts to perform different actions and maneuvers, and mechs allow certain technological concepts to be presented to the player without shoehorning them in.

Imagine an FPS where you play as a normal man who can use two chain guns, four missile launchers, a sword and shield, and a jetpack all at the same time. How would you animated that? How would he use all of these weapons? But if you slap them on a mech, it makes sense.

If you ask me, it's got to be a joke. Not only is making a tank walk on two legs a technical nightmare, but there's no point in making a walking tank to begin with. Putting legs on a tank would raise its clearance, increasing its frontal projection area. It'd also be less stable. Suppose the legs help the tank travel bad roads... I don't see the logic in that. Isn't that what treads are for? I mean, anyone who'd seriously consider making a thing like that has got to be a wacko. ...Come to think of it, there was a guy in the States who wrote a paper on that subject. What was his name... Emerson? Heinrich? ...Something like that; I don't really remember. 'Course, no one took that seriously.

At the end of the day, a tank is just a vehicle, a machine. It can't be an extension of its pilot like a mech because it lacks the anthropomorphization aspect in its design.

A mech isn't meant to be like a tank, it's meant to be like a really big suit of armor.

Modern tanks move over hills and rubble just fine.
If you decided that's not good enough, if you absolutely must have a tank with legs just in case, it would still have treads on its legs, and it would be shaped more like a tortoise than a human.
Warfare has never been about what looks cool.

>>343954552
All those benefits apply to a tank as well, at least a futuristic tank with the same technology required for a giant humanoid mech. You get proportionally LESS room for extra weapons inside a mech, not more.
I guess the one difference is a tank wouldn't be able to climb ladders, but a ladder scaled up for a mech to use would be silly anyway, so just don't put ladders in your game.
>>
how would you balance mechs and tanks in a game together? what would be the advantages of using one over the other?
Would you have:
>anime magic powered mechs who fly really fast and do all the ninja shit

Tanks use treads, anon. They don't have omnidirectional moving, they have to turn either their tracks or their turrets.

>>343957657

Small, agile, but weak

Durable all-rounder

Mechs rely on superior positioning (getting on top of buildings, where tanks can't go, and firing down on tanks, where tanks can't elevate their guns to fire back) but lose in a straight-up fight.

Kind-of like Light Assault and Heavy in Planetside 2.

No one has ever made an outright magical tank. I think westerners are too obsessed with realism, and that's why a lot of modern western games are so boring. What ever happened to us, we created things like Lensman and Flash Gordon. Now we're so boring in an attempt to be real.

there is stretching belief and there is supressing disbelief
tank super-weapons stretch belief (it does not exist now but it might someday)
mechs are super-weapons by nature and involve suppressing disbelief (if the super-powerful weapons they carry existed someday why would you not just mount it on a less resource intensive platform)

both are fiction set in the future but one is sci-fi and one is fantasy

And how is a humanoid mech supposed to aim without turning its arms and head at all? If it needs to do a sudden 180, a tank with a turret would accomplish that using far fewer moving parts.

>>
>>343957621
I remember this argument was made back in 2001, in a PS2 game called Ring of Red. It's an alternate reality where WW2 was fought with gasoline-powered mechs. In the game, they say that in the European theatre, tanks outperformed mechs (called AFW in the game) because Europe had mostly flat terrain. In the game's setting, you fight in Japan, which has irregular terrain, so the mechs are used instead of tanks. And even more, there's a class of mech used for artillery (Heavy AFW) that indeed uses 4 legs instead of two.

>>343959047
It's part of the psychoframe. They never explained what that T really was.
>>
You know if the U.S. military had a mechanized infantry corps that had mechs, I'd probably start working out and join the military immediately.

PTSD? High stress combat situations? Mental reprogramming with military dogma?
That's fine, I get to pilot a giant robot!
>>
Keep in mind that in the original Gundam there was a specific reason for abandoning all normal forms of warfare for mechs.

Because the creation of minovsky particles created electronic interference on such a level that all forms of radar and communication that wasn't in point-blank range was rendered completely useless. Everyone had to go back to either fighting in melee combat, or firing blindly in a direction and hope you hit something.
>>
>>343959024
Reminder that the Earth Federation held off an army of Zakus, Goufs, Doms for nine months using only tanks and footsoldiers, then a single Gundam and a handful of GMs completely wiped Zeon in two months.

Not in space where you're also bombarded by radiation throwing shit off, and there's crap cluttered all around our solar system.

The Federation's solution was a barrage of laser cannons large enough to blanket everything in front of them, then sweep in with mechs to engage what survived.

It's not a sequel, they just make a ton of games. It's one of the longest-running game series that almost never got out of Japan. It has more than 70 games, and you probably played one of its spin-offs and never even realized.
Another Century's Episode is a spin-off.

Wouldn't a mech that's basically a highly armored exoskeleton that's roughly or just a bit larger than a human be very practical though? You could fit machineguns onto its arms and shit and you'd have a mobile machinegun platform. Something a bit like the Stealth suit in pic related. And it wouldn't have a larger silhouette.

That would break the arm.

Patlabor takes the idea of using mechs somewhat realistically in that if you push them to any real degree, they break rather easily. They're mostly for intimidation and because they can step on you.

The exception are the military-grade mechs like pic related who are made of WAY higher materials and can rip a police mech apart with its bare hands.

and I'm not talking about inventing a different armor for tanks I'm talking about if you do find a material capable of supporting the forces a mecha would endure it would also make for a supremely efficient armor armor for tanks or heck could directly be used to make helicopter gunships lose several of its issues

because the tank is starting to be an outdated concept, the real enemy of the mecha is the helicopter because that thing can literally do everything a mech can better

Personally I'm not a fan of Tau getting HUGE suits, Crisis suits were perfect as a more "realistic" mecha which made sense as Tau tactics were pretty grounded and modernish (big emphasis on ranged combat, infantry supported by vehicles, mobility, markerlights etc.). Crisis suits were bulky and not terribly high-tech and basically perfect as far as I was concerned. But I guess they bought into the weeb meme.

>>343966110
then we use composite armor because a tank is hella more efficient with surface area and volume than a mecha is

and yes a tank would be significantly more mobile due to several key factors but one notable factor is the square cube law
as surface area increases exponentially volume and as a direct result mass increase by a power of 3 in addition to large objects being heavier

now humans are fairly well optimized for our weight but a mecha would run into the issue of sinking into any form of soil right up to the bedrock severely limiting the terrain types it could be utilized in
now its extremely high up center of gravity combined again with its vastly more massive weight would result in it tipping over on even the slightest incline a modern day tank would take with ease, not to mention given the vastly more powerful engines (because engines in a universe with mechs are capable of moving mechs after all) all tanks build in that universe would be capable of climbing significantly steeper slopes

and what about climbing? well even if you had a magical material that could withstand the forces requires for a mecha to pull itself up by 1 or 2 arms anchored only by their hands, whatever it actually tried to climb would not be made out of it and the mecha would just rip chunks out of it instead of actually climbing it

and jumping? if you can make a mech jump you can make a tank jump

Total War is a new kind of thing. It's expansion + Standalone. If you buy all of them, they combine together into one big Total War. If you don't, you can play them on their own.

So, it's a neat idea. Seems the logical choice for DoW3. Instead of DoW4, it'll be DoW3: Winter Assault 2! Or something daft.

A new race is more work than a usual DLC, at least it seems like that. They never really added Tau to DoW2, or Necrons. Maybe they don't think those would be popular enough? Now they've announced DoW3 with SMs (face of the setting)/Eldar (they REALLY like Eldar) and Orks (green is best!). At some point they gotta and Chaos and IG, I guess. Then they have lots of options and I don't see Tau being really high on that list. I guess I am just being pessimistic.

A functioning mech would cost an insane amount of money, and for it to be viable in combat it would need incredible mobility and/or flight capability.
I mean fuck, if you didnt already know, tank are a HUGE fuckin wast of money irl. One fuckin RPG7-AT to the back or maybe side and you just lost 6 mil. I mean yeah they have a place in warfare, they'll probably never be completely phased out, but they arent these crazy death machines people make them out to be.

And after all that you should realize what an even bigger liability a mech would be. Not only would the production cost be beyond huge, but how are you going to go about protecting such an asset? Gonna add shit tons of armor? Well thats gonna slow that fucker down, open it to a barrage of fire, remove flight capabilities, and potentially make a machine that will sink into the earth(likely restricting it to paved roads and streets). On top of that, I dont think I've ever seen a mech design that wasnt "Weak Points: The Machine".
Now the other way you can go is mobility, thats probably the most viable course to take, but even an M1 Abrams has armor on the front(damn good armor in fact). One shot anywhere on a "mobile suit" would potentially fuck it to hell/cripple it and leave it open to be destroyed.

All that shit said, I do believe there may be potential for a "mobile suit" is city warfare. Long open ranges? its fucked. But in a city that obscures range and is ripe with flanking potential, I think a fast flight capable mech could be useful in dispatching enemy armored vehicles/armed infantry. Then again it would need some sort of counter measure against infantry handled rockets. Any window could kill you otherwise.

are you aware of how momentum works in space?
having the gun on a turret would significantly help stabilize the object as the momentum is delivered close to the center of mass making it easier for the thrusters to properly counteract it

on the arm however after one shot it would be spinning out of control and due to the unbalanced shape the thrusters would have a massively difficult time counteracting the complex rotation

Did you even watch Gundam? What you're thinking about is the GN particles for Gundam 00. GN particles are AD. Minovsky particles are UC.

I can imagine the giant mecha to be to support drones what the Mauser and the stupidly large cannon on rails was to regular tanks.

Or what the Yamato was to regular ships.

One of the biggest hurdle we'd have to cross for combat mechs is joints. They can only support so much until they break/give and it doesn't take much to fuck up joints. They're like a huge taget for your enemies.

Fucking awesome on paper, but horribly impractical, expensive, and experimental?

Would a flying tank even be a tank anymore?
Tanks are usually characterized by a main cannon, heavy frontal armor, treads, and being a ground vehicle. Literally every other part of the tank is a weak spot especially the back, bottom, and top. Youd have to abandon the armoring meta and basically make it a flying 120 mm cannon that could aim anywhere.

I really think youd have to classify that as something new entirely.

All that technology and still manually loading mortars. Yeah, yeah, nothing beats a human at the helm. But they could've made some semiauto loader that still allowed for a human to fix a jam or something.
>>
>>343970940
a mecha is characterized primarily by its resemblance to a human
since when do humans fly?
if a mecha can fly and still be called a mecha a tank can fly and still be called a tank

that said I've mentioned before the real reason we'll never have mechas is not tanks but rather helicopters

We're whats left.
We scour the board drifting from thread to thread trying to find some semblance of what once was. Shadows of the past, left behind with the changing times.

browsing /v/ is too habitual, that's why we're still here. All the meming and reposts have become noise. Its all easily overlooked until we find something that stands out just enough. Like this thread.

Yes, they've actually made a few.

The only reason people obsess over realisism in fiction is because the only happiness they get is imagining themselves in the fictional situations, and if it's "realistic" then they think maybe it could actually happen.

What was that Gundam series where all the pilots were cute boys without shirts on?

I dont understand what youre getting at here, anon. The dawn of incredible destructive infantry rockets has made tank a liability one way or the other. This aint WW2, its literally hand held tech that can destroy a 6 milion dollar investment now, and it can come anywhere theres infantry.
