these threads are best when the person playing is really bad at the game. which is a shame, because being a series vet will let you walk over FE7
I guess what I'm trying to say is, OP, don't take any time making sure none of your units are going to die. this game is easy enough that you can really beat endgame with just Athos, Renault and Pent if you want. unless you're specifically doing something funny like babying Nino or Rebecca into an insane monster or something, just throw your units at the enemy and see what happens.

The first "book" of 3 is also a remake of 1, and the DS remakes are each of the first and second parts, along with New Mystery including the extra scenarios that were downloadable from the satellite thing. It also includes a recap of the events of Shadow Dragon so you can even skip that one if you're not up to it for whatever reason. The main difference between the two mechanics wise is that SD includes disposable units and the gaidens serve as a backup for low unit counts, while New Mystery lets you create a personal unit to act as Marth's chief bodyguard who will probably break the game as long as you don't try to make it a mage.
Gaiden is Gaiden, if the unique game mechanics are enough for you to put up with both extremes of terrible map design, you might like it. If not, oh well.

It's not a punishment so much as a "you don't need these extra maps since you're already competent". What sucks is missing out on said maps even if they don't have anything special, but later difficulties are hard enough that you can probably plan around strategically killing shitty units. Though it would be better if you could just dismiss them and save yourself the trouble of having to deliberately rack up a kill count, hell, firing everybody and recruiting nothing but generics could have made for an interesting run, but they don't give you that as an option, and no one likes getting the units they put all that work into killed, every single other fucking game in the series conditions the player NOT to do such a thing. The main mechanics it introduced outside of the disposable unit shit unlike anything else in the series are all in New Mystery so if you're only playing for reclassing shenanigans you might as well skip to that one.

Awakening and #FE for DLC, too easy, casual, and waifufaggotry, and Shadow Dragon for removing elements the previous games were praised for.

8 is very easy because it has free grinding, but it's pretty fun anyway. It's the same style as 7 since it's GBA.
9 is good and reintroduces skills. 10 is sequel to 9, it's good and hard, but some are turned off by the story and stuff like unit availability.
I didn't like 11 personally.
13 is very easy, much like 8. It doesn't have as much waifuing as you seem to think. That's mostly contained in the supports. Main story is fine. Difficulty is low and the map variety is generally considered bad because almost all of them are rout.
14 Birthright is decent, much better than 13. Map variety is better and it's harder than 13, but still not too hard. Unless you choose to not grind, then it's a decent challenge.
Conquest is considered very good, with a dumb story. Objectives are varied and there's no grinding allowed besides a particular DLC. Playing it right now and it's fun.
Don't know about Revelations will get later.

It's a chore to get through. It relies on gimmicks on the maps to be interesting, and they're badly implemented. Balance is an entirely different story. If you really wanna get it, knock yourself out, but it's a slog for me personally.

I actually agree with you. I'm not really a fan of having a self insert that is so central to the plot. Awakening was meh, but Fates was just bad. Kamui was way too neutral to pander everyone and IS didn't take any risks when making the routes. That being said, I don't mind the option. I play as FeMU in Awakening so I can't even waifu it up, and I didn't marry anyone in Birthright or Conquest. That changed in Revelation since I gave cousin the dick.
Also, Revelation is probably the worst Fire Emblem game I've every played. None of its potential was used, unit balancing is absolute horseshit, gimmicks in almost every single chapter, great maps got fucked, plot all over the place, etc. What a horrible game.

fe6 is the best fire emblem game because it's more strategy and less RPG
mainly because the map design and your units all being weak as hell means you can't just grind and win
