My own personal headcanon is that you are actually using Chara's body and soul, just possessed by the player as a host, and that the years of being mummified and stuffed underground left the body looking very little like how it used to, thus confusing any monster that saw it. Keep in mind that human souls persist long after death. Given that Asriel died on top of Chara's body, it's not impossible that Chara's soul went back inside, and slept in it and just nobody noticed.

What you're actually doing, is sort of guiding Chara to one of two paths. "Frisk" is what happens when you guide the body and soul back to the humanity that Chara rejected when they were alive before. However, genocide is reawakening Chara, without ANY of the humanity that he may have had before he died. That said, you're still in control of the soul, so Chara can't really come back.

The thing to remember is that there are two chara. The fallen child chara who died and is still dead, and the demon chara, which is basically just the games way of describing the player.
